What happened

The episode as NWS MHX wrote it up.

An approaching cold front and trough of low pressure combined with a very unstable airmass produced conditions conducive to robust thunderstorm development. An inland moving sea breeze aided in the development of a large cluster of thunderstorms stretching generally along the Highway 17 corridor from Onslow to Craven County, and then northeastward from there through Beaufort, western Hyde, and Tyrrell County. Several of these storms became severe, producing damaging wind gusts as high as around 70 mph. One storm produced up to quarter sized hail across central Tyrrell County.
