The environment that day was conducive for storms to thrive, and reached strengths that caused a swath of tree and power line damage from the Ohio River to the Appalachian Mountains. The line of storms continued to steadily shift eastward with the arrival of the cold front that evening, with the risk of damaging wind gusts also coming to an end.

NWS Charleston, WV wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Jun 14, 3:35 AM EST, 3 hours 5 minutes earlier. Its key messages:
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston WV 435 AM EDT Sun Jun 14 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... 12Z Aviation Forecast Discussion update. The forecast package remains in tact with little to no changes made this time around. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Severe weather will be possible today with a cold frontal passage taking place this late afternoon and into the evening. Damaging winds will be the primary threat. 2) Chances of rain will return toward the end of the week with another cold frontal passage expected Thursday. Severe weather will be possible with this feature as well. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1... Cold frontal passage today will prompt shower and thunderstorm activity ahead and along the front with a good possibility of severe weather or at least stronger storms with the potential for damaging wind and heavy downpours. A pre- frontal trough will support the idea of energy along with dewpoints in the low 70s and steep low level lapse rates to provide a corridor of strong surface based bouyancy ahead of storms. With a moist and destabilized warm sector to begin with, activity will likely be all day with the stronger thunderstorms ahead of the front this afternoon and lingering strong storms along the frontal boundary later this afternoon and into the evening. Hi-res models have embedded thunderstorms in cluster waves ahead of the front and then a broken line along the front expected to trail into the area this late afternoon and into the evening when frontal passage is forecast to take place. Due to activity ahead of the front, the last bit of storm coverage may not be as strong as previous activity due to instability being used up with little in the way of the frontal boundary to work with, however this all depends on how much cloud coverage and activity we get in the late morning through the early to mid afternoon. With sufficient CAPE and robust shear updrafts will provide stronger storms with the potential for downburst wind damage. We cannot rule out hail due to sufficient DCAPE and water loaded sounding profiles which will be capable of bringing down hail fast enough to not melt all the way even with high freezing levels in place. Large hail will be hard to achieve but also we cannot rule out small hail and the possibility of a tornado or two. The significant tornado parameter is right at criteria along with lower LCLs and sufficient helicity, not too mention enough MUCAPE and no convective inhibition in place all to promote a slight potential tornadic environment. SPC has us in a slight risk to our eastern and northern flanks of our coverage area which will support higher instability and more scattered to widespread thunderstorm activity with stronger updrafts and downdrafts with the potential for hail and higher probability for tornadoes along with a higher threat for damaging wind. Heavy water loaded soundings with skinny CAPE and a very moist column with PWATS upwards near 2 to 3 standard deviations above the climatological norm will support downbursts along with heavy downpours which may cause localized flooding. The most prone areas ares ones that repeatedly get hit by heavy thunderstorm activity or even low lying and flood prone areas who get hit with 2+ inch per hour rates of heavy rain will be susceptible to localized flood issues. WPC has us in a marginal threat for excessive rainfall for the entire area which support isolated flooding chances, especially to the susceptible areas previously mentioned. Convective allowing models have broken segments of cluster storms along the aforementioned trough in front of the frontal boundary passing through in the afternoon. Timing on the activity will be much of the day, especially during peak heating hours a few hours prior to sunset as the frontal boundary pushes further into the region. A final line of embedded thunderstorms along a broken line will likely follow frontal passage until the evening at which point activity should wane by sunset. The strongest storms will be across the eastern half of the coverage area as they progress up in the higher elevations with sufficient lift and stronger vertical velocities such as steeper lapse rates supporting stronger updrafts and where wind where shear is ample enough to cause severe damaging wind gusts. After frontal passage and after all the expected storm activity things will settle down as high pressure settles in at the surface and upper level zonal flow keeps the area settled into midweek with below seasonable temperatures expected to accompany the settled weather. By mid day Wednesday, chances for precipitation come back to the region although much of the expected activity will be for Thursday as another could front is projected to impact the region with possible severe weather. KEY MESSAGE 2... A cold front is then expected to drive through on Thursday as previously mentioned but some models have it hung up through Friday leaving high chances for precipitation and thunderstorm activity through that time frame. SPC currently has the area outlooked in a 15% risk for severe weather Thursday as a dynamic mid-latitude cyclone approaches from the west. Models are showing the potential for strong shear and high CAPE across the mid Ohio Valley and Appalachians with this system. Strong damaging wind will be a threat along with potential for other threats but precise aspects of this dynamic system will be provided as time gets closer to the event. && .AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... VFR conditions will prevail through the morning. One caveat is that EKN may have some brief patchy fog affect the site therefore mentioned BCFG through the morning. Any restrictions should be temporary. Increasing mid level clouds and boundary layer flow should prevent the fog from developing elsewhere. Expect vicinity thunderstorms at the sites for much of this afternoon and into the evening. Any thunderstorm could briefly reduce visibility to MVFR or even IFR and produce variable, gusty winds. Winds will increase with gusts up to 25kt through afternoon predominately out of the southwest until frontal passage takes place turning the direction out of the northwest by late afternoon into the early evening. After frontal passage, lower stratus will take over most of the area with the potential for fog, especially where sites get previously hit with rainfall.
