A moist Pacific trough moved into western Wyoming and brought heavy snow to the western mountains. The heaviest snow fell in Yellowstone Park where the Two Oceans Plateau SNOTEL site reported 28 inches of new snow. The Absarokas, Tetons, Wind River, Salt River, and Wyoming Ranges all reported new snow totals of over 20 inches. The heavy snow resulted in difficult travel conditions and road closures. In areas east of the Continental Divide, high wind was the main hazard. The most widespread high wind occurred in Natrona County where there were widespread wind gusts over 70 mph, with a maximum wind gust of 88 mph along Hat Six Road to the east of Casper. The Johnson County airport had a wind gust of 81 mph.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1020 AM MST Thu Dec 18 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - A quieter day in terms of wind across the Cowboy State with cooler but still above normal temperatures returning. - Another disturbance is on the horizon with snow arriving to western WY this afternoon through early Saturday morning. - Strong gusty winds look to return as well, starting as early as Friday morning with chances for widespread gusts of 60 mph or more for mainly central and northern WY. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 253 AM MST Thu Dec 18 2025 The high winds did not disappoint on Wednesday. Widespread wind gusts of 60 mph or more were observed across the state. Some notable observations include the Lander Airport which recorded a gust of 91 mph, which may be one of if not the strongest non convective gust on record. Other locations such as Mt Coffin observed a gust of 144 mph and Lower Red Canyon which saw a gust of 123 mph. The gust at Lower Red Canyon would currently be the strongest gusts on record dating back to 2019. Overall, it was a very Wyoming-like event with widespread high winds that hi-res models handled pretty well. Onto the forecast; the Pacific hose of moisture continues to flow and after just dealing with one system another one is on its heels. The next disturbance looks to be very similar to the previous with a few differences. Those differences are more moisture and precipitation with slightly weaker winds. Once again a disturbance will move onshore from the PACNW and cling to the border of the US and Canada as it gradually treks eastward. This will usher in southwesterly flow to the region leading to another significant mountain snow event. Southwesterly flow should lead to enhanced orographic dynamics across the western mountains with heavy snow of 1 to 2 inches per hour likely at times. The longer duration event should allow for more precipitation to fall over the western valleys such as Star Valley and Jackson Hole. Unfortunately warm air will gradually be ushered into the region due to this flow pattern. This means that many lower elevation areas of western WY will see cold enough temperatures to see snow at first but eventually a transition over to a mix of rain/snow or heavy wet snow is likely. As for the timing of the event, precipitation will make its way into western WY by the late morning and early afternoon on Thursday. Snowfall will intensify by the late evening on Thursday through the morning hours on Friday. This period would be the best window for lower elevations to see accumulating snow as temperatures will be at or below freezing. Probabilistic guidance shows a 40 to 70% chance of 3 or more inches of snowfall during this period. Winds will also increase around this time with western valleys seeing periodic gusts of 25 to 35 mph. The Upper Green River Basin looks to also have good chances for accumulating snow during this period. Guidance showers a 50 to 80% chance for 3 or more inches mainly from Cora to Bondurant with lesser amount nearby Pinedale. As for western mountains temperatures are forecast to be cold enough to keep snow falling through the event. Moderate to heavy snowfall will be mostly constant from Thursday night through late Friday with a few lulls possible at times. Overall, mountains will get hammered with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches especially Thursday night into Friday afternoon. Precipitation gradually winds down late Friday night into the morning hours on Saturday. Storm total amounts currently look to be 10 to 20 inches for mid to low elevations with amounts of 2 to 3 or more feet among the highest elevations. Guidance supports this with a 40 to 70% chance of higher elevations seeing 20 inches or more of snow accumulation. Lower elevations will see accumulation greatly impacted by warming temperatures that arrive on Friday. Currently amounts range from 4 to 8 inches with higher amounts along the foothills and northern portions of the Upper Green River Basin. East of the Divide will once again be hindered by unfavorable flow with little to no chances for precipitation until late Friday into early Saturday. This time period looks to be when a potent cold front moves across the state which will lead to the best chances for snow showers east of the Divide. Any snow accumulation looks very minimal with at most maybe an inch or so. This disturbance would not be complete without some kind of wind impacts. Similar to the previous system a very tight pressure gradient develops ahead of the cold front. A strong jet streak will move over the region starting early Friday. Hi-res models show another large swath of 700 mb winds ranging from 60 to 70 knots settle across the state. Currently probabilistic guidance is showing a 50 to 70% chance for wind gusts of 60 mph or more. However, winds look less widespread with the best chances mainly over central and northern WY. There will once again be the possibility for mountain waves especially along the eastern slopes of the Wind River, Absaroka, and Bighorn Ranges. These would once again put locations nearby Lander, Cody, and Buffalo in the bullseye for very strong wind gusts of 70 mph or more. Hi-res guidance mostly puts the best potential for this during the morning and early afternoon on Friday. However, there is still some time for this to change but currently there are very similar signals to the most recent high wind event on Wednesday. It is growing in likelihood that either High Wind Watches or Warnings will be issued but no highlights will be issued at this time. The combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall has lead to the issuance of Winter Storm Warnings across the mountains of western WY including the Tetons, Gros Ventre, Salt River/Wyoming, Wind River and Absaroka Ranges as well as YNP. Lower elevations valleys of western WY, such as Jackson Hole and Star Valley have lesser snow amounts but due to some periods of moderate snowfall and gusty winds, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued. The Upper Green River Basin also has a Winter Weather Advisory due to similar impacts but possibly more snow accumulation. The remainder of the forecast period sees the active pattern continue. A brief lull looks to occur Saturday and parts of Sunday before another potential system impacts the region. At this time the greatest likelihood for impacts would be western WY but that may be subject to change. As for temperatures, warm well above normal values return for the upcoming holiday week. Long range models are showing a return of mid to upper 50 degree highs east of the Divide and low to mid 40s west of the Divide. As a result the potential for a white Christmas is looking very slim for anywhere outside of western WY. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z FRIDAY/... Issued at 1012 AM MST Thu Dec 18 2025 Active weather returns for western airports this period, with snow already picking up at KJAC. Have moved up snow period a couple hours there, continuing through most of tonight. A brief break there around sunrise, but another round of snow by midmorning. Snow band will also pick up at KBPI/KPNA later this afternoon, with main push occurring through 06Z. KPNA gets a break overnight, but has another push of snow Friday morning. Remaining sites should stay out of the precipitation through the next 24 hours, with high cirrus pouring across the area. Winds will also be strong through the day Friday. Heavy snow fell in Yellowstone Park. The highest amounts was at the Two Oceans Plateau SNOTEL site where 28 inches of new snow fell.
Heavy snow fell in the Absarokas. There were numerous reports of over a foot of new snow with a maximum of 24 inches at the Younts Peak SNOTEL site.
Heavy snow fell throughout the western slopes of the Wind River Range, with a maximum of 22 inches at the Kendall Ranger Station SNOTEL site.
Heavy snow fell in portions of the Eastern Wind River Range, with a maximum amount of 16 inches at the Deer Park SNOTEL site.
Heavy snow fell in the Salt and Wyoming Ranges. The maximum amount was 23 inches of new snow at the Triple Peak SNOTEL site.
Heavy snow fell in portions of the Tetons. The highest amount reported was 21 inches at the Phillips Bench SNOTEL site were 21 inches fell.
A 63 mph wind gust occurred at Wood River South and a 61 mph wind gust occurred at Irma Lake.
High wind was widespread across much of Natrona County, with gusts over 65 mph reported in many locations. Some of the highest gusts included 88 mph along Hat Six Road to the east of Casper, 86 mph at Scenic Drive on the south side of Casper and 76 mph at the Natrona County airport.
Winds as high as 78 mph on Casper Mountain.
A Thermopolis weather sensor gusted to 60 mph.
The strongest wind gust was 80 at the Moss Rock weather sensor. A gust of 71 mph was also recorded at the Lander airport.
High wind occurred across the higher elevations of the Green and Rattlesnake Ranges. The highest wind gust was 85 mph at the Camp Creek RAWS site.
High wind occurred through much of southern Johnson County. The highest wind gust reported was 72 mph at Purdy East.
The Schoolhouse RAWS site had maximum wind gusts of 85 mph.
A 65 mph wind gust occurred at Cottonwood Merna.
High wind occurred through much of northern Johnson County. Some of the more notable gusts were 81 mph at the Buffalo airport and 78 mph at Pine Creek along Interstate 90.
A wind gust of 59 mph occurred along Interstate 80 in Green River.
A 66 mph wind gust was reported along Interstate 80. At the Sweetwater County airport, a maximum wind gust of 61 mph was recorded.
