A line of showers and thunderstorms followed a warm front across the Middle Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians during the morning of April 3rd. A cold front brought more precipitation into the area the night of the 3rd and then stalled over West Virginia through the morning of the 4th.

A line of showers and thunderstorms followed a warm front across the Middle Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians during the morning of April 3rd. A cold front brought more precipitation into the area the night of the 3rd and then stalled over West Virginia through the morning of the 4th. Showers continued in the vicinity of the boundary which slid to the south on the afternoon of the 4th before being lifted north as a warm front again on the 5th. Another cold front arrived the evening of the 5th and once again stalled over West Virginia. Precipitation eventually tapered off as the front sank to the southeast on the 7th.
While two to four inches of rain fell across much of West Virginia, the southwestern portions of the state received four to six inches. Roads began to flood as creeks, streams, and small rivers rose out of their banks. Water rescues also occurred in Boone, Jackson, and Kanawha Counties. Portions of Middle Island Creek, Twelvepole Creek, and the Mud River experienced flooding.

A system serves up showers and thunderstorms at times through
the weekend, with flooding increasingly likely for the Mid-Ohio
Valley region.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1235 AM Thursday...
Showers and thunderstorms associated with a cold front will push
into our area early this morning. A low level jet (currently 60
knots at 3000 feet near Charleston) will keep very strong winds
just off the surface this morning. There is concern that these
storms could mix these winds to the ground and produce damaging
wind gusts. Model soundings also show helicity values of 800 to
900 as the line hits our western counties with shear values of
50 to 60. Therefore, tornados are also a possibility. With
effective CAPE of 500 to 1000 in this area as well, some large
hail is possible.
The cold front will then stall over eastern Kentucky and West
Virginia today and tonight. Heating south of the front should
once again create conditions favorable for severe weather this
afternoon. The threat of flash flooding also increases. A couple
of meso models are showing some heavy precipitation getting into
northeastern West Virginia, although the majority are not. This
does lead to concerns that the Flood Watch may need to be
extended across the rest of northern West Virginia, but will
hold off for now until models are in better agreement.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 156 PM Wednesday...
Frontal boundary initially stalled out across the area early Friday,
should generally lift back north during the day. Heavy rain/storms
are looking likely early Friday along the Ohio River and North
Central WV in area of front. However, showers and storms will
continue to occur during the day Friday, but thinking is as we
progress into the late afternoon or evening hours, the bulk of
precipitation should generally be north of the Ohio River closer to
the front. Still looking at the potential for severe storms, mainly
north of the Ohio River on Friday, with a damaging wind threat
possible. By the time we get into Friday evening/night, the front
should have lifted well to our north, along with the axis of heavier
rainfall as waves of low pressure move along the front.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 140 PM Wednesday...
Key Point:
* Flooding concerns linger into early next week.
An unsettled pattern continues as a low pressure system moves into
the Great Lakes region and then migrates northeast on Saturday.
While drier conditions may creep in to southern and eastern portions
of the CWA during the afternoon, the best chances for precipitation
linger across southeast OH, northwest WV, and northeast KY. Rain and
thunderstorms overspread the area as a cold front approaches
Saturday night, then activity continues into Sunday night while the
front slowly trudges east.
During the first half of the work week, another low passes to the
north while an associated upper trough pivots overhead. Periods of
precipitation remain possible as this system crosses and potentially
sends another front across the area.
Flooding remains a concern, particularly across the western half of
the CWA where soils are already expected to be saturated from
previous rainfall. In addition to an initial risk of flash flooding
this weekend, runoff is expected to lead to rises on rivers, creeks,
and streams with potential for river flooding to persist through
early next week.

As of 145 AM Thursday...
Showers and thunderstorms associated with a cold front will push
into our area early this morning, creating brief IFR conditions.
A low level jet (currently 60 knots at 3000 feet near
Charleston) will keep very strong winds just off the surface
this morning. There is concern that these storms could mix these
winds to the ground and produce damaging wind gusts. Tornados
and large hail are also possible. Behind the line, some rain
will create MVFR conditions for an hour or two. The line should
weaken some as it pushes eastward into West Virginia.
The cold front will stall over the area today and tonight. This
will create some MVFR clouds north of the front, with some areas
dropping to IFR tonight. Generally VFR clouds can be expected south
of the front. However, showers and thunderstorms at times will
create brief IFR conditions. Some thunderstorms this afternoon
south of the cold front could become severe.

Mill Creek and Kiahsville Creek exceeded their banks and flooded adjacent roads. Moses Fork flooded Blue Moon Hollow Road. Cove Creek Flooded portions of East Lynn Road. Flooding also occurred on Stonecoal Road and Lost Creek Road.
A tree was blown down onto power lines along Evans Hill Road near Mount Hope.
High water was observed on Green Valley Road.
High water was observed at the 100 block of North Pinch Road in Elkview.

Near Craigsville, several trees were blown down onto power lines along Locust Grove Road.
The Mud River near Griffithsville exceeded its bankfull level of 12 feet on the morning of April 3rd, then reached a crest around 13.2 feet that afternoon. The river fell back into its banks that night, but rose back above bankfull the following morning. After a second, slightly lower crest, the river returned to, and remained within, its banks the evening of the 4th. During the times the river was out of its banks, fields and low areas along the river flooded.
Trees and power lines fell onto the road between Crystal Block and the Hatfield Cemetery.
A tree and power line blew down onto Coal River Road near Bolt Road in Glen Daniel.
A tree was blown down along High School Drive near Vo Tech Drive. Another downed tree was observed in Beckley along Robert C Byrd Drive. A 60 mile per hour wind gust was measured at the Beckley airport.
A downed tree blocked most of Stone Coal Road between Kiah Creek Road and Twelvepole Creek Road near the town of Kermit.
Twelvepole Creek near Wayne exceeded a bankfull level of 19 feet on the evening of April 3rd. The creek initially crested just above, and then fell back below, bankfull overnight. The creek rose back out of its banks the next morning, reaching a crest of around 23.6 feet on the evening of the 4th. The creek then slowly receded into its banks the morning of the 5th. Athletic fields in Shirley Burgess Park, Bridge Street, Wayne City Park, low sections of Mose Asbury Road, and Athletic fields at Twelvepole Valley park were flooded during this time period.
The Mud River at Hamlin rose above its bankfull level of 13 feet late in the morning on April 3rd. The river rose to a crest near 14.9 feet on the evening of the 4th, then returned to its banks the next morning. Sections of Route 3 in West Hamlin, a house and ball fields near the High School Bridge, low areas near the high school marquee, Peppermint Lane and surrounding fields in Myra, and low areas along the Mud River between Palermo and Hamlin flooded in the midst of the river being out of its banks.
North of Buckhannon, a power line was blown down onto Pringle Tree Park Road. Another power line was blown down along Serviceberry Lane.
High water was observed on Carpenter Run Road at Deerwalk Highway from Slate Run.
In Danville, a tree blew down near the Dollar General along Daniel Boone Parkway.
Harbour Lane was flooded in Hurricane.
Twelvepole Creek at Lavalette exceeded a bankfull level of 19 feet on the morning of April 4th. The creek rose to a crest around 20.3 feet that night, then receded back into its banks the next morning. While the creek was out of its banks, low sections of Plymale Branch Road, Sugarwood Golf Course, and Creekside Golf Course flooded.
Backyards and basements of homes on Camden Avenue in Buckhannon were inundated with water.
Flooding was observed on Route 60 between Atlas Recycling and Camden Park. Other areas that observed flooding included the Tri State Airport Access Road, Lynn Oak Drive, and Lynn Creek Road near Lavalette Nursery Road.
The Mud River above Milton exceeded a bankfull level of 19 feet on the morning of April 4th. After reaching a crest near 22.4 feet early the next morning, the creek returned below bankfull on the afternoon of the 5th. Low spots along Girl Scout Camp, East and West Mud River Road had flooded during the time the river was out of its banks.
Middle Island Creek at Little exceeded a bankfull level of 14 feet on the morning of April 4th. After cresting around 14.8 feet later that morning, the creek returned to its banks during the afternoon. Stewarts Run Road and fields across from the gage were flooded while the creek was out of its banks.
A semi truck became stuck in high water on Route 152 near Jay Wilson Road. Water also surrounded a home on Route 152, rose over 5th Street Road at Nelson Storage, and invaded a basement.
Flooding was observed on Garretts Fork Road, Mud Fork Road near Verdunville, Harts Creek Road near the intersection with Buck Fork Road, and the mouth of the hollow at Browns Run Road.
The East Fork of Twelvepole Creek near Dunlow exceeded a bankfull level of 11 feet on the morning of April 4th. After cresting around 12.6 feet late that afternoon, the creek gradually receded back into its banks that night. During this time period, low sections of Twelvepole Creek Road and Frank Branch Road flooded, along with low-lying fields adjacent to the creek.
Fast rising water was observed behind Liberty Heights Apartments due to a blocked culvert.
Portions of Six Mile Road near Ramage became impassable due to high water issues.
High water was observed at Greenbrier Street and Rutledge Road, and at the northbound Greenbrier Street exit.
Water rescue along Jennies Creek due to home surrounded by water. Route 152 was closed from Asbury Lake to Dunlow due to overtopping pond and high water from the Right Fork of Moses Fork.
Water from Pidgeon Creek covered both lanes of Route 65. Mount Hope Drive in Dingess flooded with about a foot of water.
High water from the Right Fork of Sandlick Creek was observed on Coal River Rd.
A water rescue was conducted on Middle Fork Road near Fisher Chapel due to high water from Middle Fork.
A water rescue occurred on River Bend Road in Sissonville.
Multiple spots of Route 34 going towards Hamlin were covered by water. Flooding was observed on Court Avenue near the intersections of Straight Fork and Lower Mud River Road, Lynn Avenue near the ballfields in Hamlin, and a field and road in the 7100 block of Upper Mud River Road.
Portions of 5th Street Road were closed due to high water.
Water covered Scites Ridge Road and Nine Mile Road near the town of Midkiff.
High water covered Big Laurel Creek Road in multiple spots.
Within the community of Andrew, a water rescue was conducted for a stranded driver that drove into flooded waters. High water took out a culvert and made portions of the Daniel Boone Parkway impassable.
Water rescue occurred in the area of Strawberry Road and Fairview Drive along the Coal River.
A tree blew down along Dog Days Road in Chapmanville.
A few downed trees and a snapped power pole occurred along Bulger Road in Alkol.
A tree was blown down near Julian along Little Horse Creek Road.
Tree damage in the Ashford area resulted in local power outages.
High water was observed across Route 60 between Tanyard Station Drive and Main Street.
Downed trees and power lines in the Crosby area resulted in local power outages.
Multiple trees were blown down on Muddlety Valley Road in Hookersville.
Several trees were blown down in the heart of Tioga.
Downed trees and power lines in the Webster Springs area resulted in many local residents to be without power for a period of time.
Over 250 customers were without power due to tree damage in the Durbin area.
