.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of today and tonight)
Issued at 205 PM CST Tue Mar 4 2025

Strong winds continue across much of the western and central
portions of the area early this afternoon associated with a powerful
early spring storm system across the central US. The strong winds
will continue to progress eastward the rest of the afternoon into
the evening before gradually decreasing some overnight. The
strongest gusts (near or over 60 mph) are expected across western
Oklahoma into portions of western north Texas this afternoon, with
gusts of 45-50 mph possible further east later this afternoon into
this evening. Blowing dust will also be posisble today into this
evening, advected in from west Texas and most prevalent across
western Oklahoma and western north Texas. Given widespread wetting
rains overnight, the fire danger appears greatly diminished across
much of the area, though will continue to monitor our far
western/southwestern counties where rainfall amounts were lighter.

In addition to the wind threat, fairly steep lapse rates underneath
the upper low could foster the development of a few showers and
thunderstorms this afternoon across central and eastern Oklahoma.
Small hail, gusty winds, and perhaps a cold-air funnel or two would
be possible with the stronger storms, although this is a fairly low
probability at this time. This activtiy is expected to diminish
shortly after sunset, though a few showers could linger into the
evening.

.SHORT TERM...
(Wednesday through Thursday night)
Issued at 205 PM CST Tue Mar 4 2025

Gusty winds will continue Wednesday before decreasing for a period
Wednesday night as the surface ridge axis shifts overhead. The
reprieve from the gusty winds will be short-lived, however, as the
next low pressure system rapidly deepens across the high Plains to
our northwest Thursday. As it stands now, wind gusts to near 40
mph from the south are possible across western portions of the
area Thursday afternoon. This could lead to elevated to near-
critical fire weather conditions in these areas.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through next Monday)
Issued at 205 PM CST Tue Mar 4 2025

A dry cold front will cross the area on Friday in the wake of this
system, with some locations possibly seeing steady or falling
temperatures during the afternoon. As a cutoff low approaches from
the west on Saturday, warm advection aloft over the frontal surface
will lead to precipitation developing across the western/southern
parts of the area first and then expanding eastward across more of
the area through the day. At precipitation onset temperature
profiles appear mostly too warm to support snow except across far
western parts of the area, but column cooling may bring snow further
east, especially if precipitation rates are heavy enough. At this
time we do not expect much in the way of accumulations given such
marginal temperatures, but confidence is fairly low given low
predictability of where any heavier precipitation bands may develop
and the exact temperature profile as precipitation is occurring. We
kept things simple for now, with a broad area of rain/snow chances
during the day Saturday and will continue to refine things as we
get closer.

The cooler temperatures will not last long as upper ridging builds
overhead and gusty south winds return at the surface. Depending on
how much precipitation we see over the weekend, this could spell the
return of increased fire danger to parts of the area.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1128 AM CST Tue Mar 4 2025

Strong winds are expected to impact the area today, increasing
from west to east this afternoon into this evening with a shift to
northwest direction. The strongest winds (gusts near or over 50
knots) are expected across western Oklahoma and portions of
western north Texas, with 40+ knot gusts possible across much of
the rest of the area. A low chance for thunderstorms exists mid to
late afternoon in central Oklahoma, with a few showers possible
across northern Oklahoma. Winds will gradually decrease some
overnight, but will still remain gusty into the day on Wednesday.
