Periods of snow are expected throughout Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. The majority of this snow will fall this afternoon and this evening. The next storm system will impact Northern Nevada Thursday, resulting in light snowfall. The majority of this snow will remain north of Interstate 80. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night Snow will increase in aerial coverage and intensity this afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. Strong, southwest wind gusts are expected ahead of this cold front in Northern Nye and White Pine Counties. There is a moderate chance of snow squalls along this cold front late this afternoon into this evening, mainly in Southeastern Elko, Southern Eureka, and White Pine Counties. Steady snow will transition to more of a showery type of precipitation tonight. Isolated snow showers are expected throughout Northern and Central Nevada Tuesday morning, before ending Tuesday afternoon. Here are probabilities of two inches of snow or more for select locations in Northern and Central Nevada from 5 PM PDT Monday, March 17th, 2025 until 5 PM PDT Tuesday, March 18th, 2025: Austin - 79% Ely - 75% Lamoille - 73% Owyhee - 61% Eureka - 54% Spring Creek - 51% Wells - 51% Lages Junction - 49% Lund - 48% Elko - 27% .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday High pressure will move in on Wednesday as the previous storm moves out of the Silver State, giving us a break from the active weather. High temperatures will remain in the upper 30s and 40s through Thursday, then the synoptic pattern will shift to zonal flow. Northern Nevada will have a low chance of precipitation on Thursday and Saturday as two separate shortwave troughs will move through the area. The precipitation will remain mostly north of I-80. A trace to 0.5 inches of snow is forecast for Thursday in lower elevations, including the I-80 corridor from Battle Mountain through Pequop Summit. Up to 1.5 inches is possible for parts of State Road 225 near Mountain City and Owyhee. 1-2 inches forecast for the Rubies, and 3-4 inches of snow is forecast for the Jarbidge Mountains. The storm system on Saturday will track a bit farther north, so the snow will avoid most of the I-80 corridor, but the stretch from Wells to Pequop Summit may get a trace to 0.3 inches of snow. Similar amounts of snow is forecast for SR-225 and the Ruby and Jarbidge mountains as the last storm. Temperatures will warm to the 60s this weekend and the 70s early next week as a stronger high pressure ridge moves in on Sunday and remains in place on Monday. && .AVIATION... A cold front is moving through Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon, bringing gusty winds and precipitation. Rain and snow showers are occurring on and near KWMC, and will reach KBAM and KEKO within the next few hours. Showers are expected to last throughout the afternoon in the three terminals. Precipitation will reach KTPH and KELY later this afternoon, but will only last a short time. MVFR conditions are expected ahead of the front as cloud ceilings lower. Precipitation will stop and skies will clear over all terminals by this evening as the front exits our area.
