Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 130 PM PDT Sun Mar 16 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Windy to very windy conditions will continue into the evening hours across northern and central Nevada. A storm system will move into the area later tonight and tomorrow bringing increasing chances of rain and light accumulating snow to the region. Look for a cool week with chances for light precipitation during the latter portions of the workweek. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night. Upper ridge will be moving off to the east this afternoon, allowing for southwest flow over the forecast area. Winds have come up as previously anticipated with several remote observation sites in zone 030 reaching wind gusts greater than 58 mph. Strong winds are also evident in zone 031 where gusts are firmly in advisory criteria. Also looked at the possibility of a wind advisory in southeast Elko county for later today and it looks like strong winds will develop there later today. Expect these strong winds to continue into the evening hours. Some locations will continue to see strong winds during the overnight hours. Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Upper trough will be pushing into portions of northern Nevada through the overnight and into mid- morning tomorrow. This will bring increasing chances for precipitation to the areas north of US Highway 50. Expecting a mix of rain and snow showers though a front will be pushing through in the morning. Temperatures during the day will be below normal with readings in the 40s with 50s and 60s in central Nevada. Winds will again be on the strong side, especially in central Nevada and have issued a wind advisory as a result; this will be for northern Nye and White Pine counties. The main trough is expected to move across northern and central Nevada during the overnight on Monday. Any mix of precipitation will already have changed over to all snow by this time. There could be some isolated blowing and drifting snow by Monday night with some windy areas staying elevated. Overnight lows on Monday night will be in the teens to 20s. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday A low pressure system will continue moving through the Great Basin on Tuesday. Precipitation, gusty winds, and cold temperatures are forecast for much of our region. Highs will be in the upper 30s for much of northern and central Nevada, and winds will be between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Up to 1 inch of snow is forecast for the lower elevation valleys, with 2-5 inches of snow forecast for higher elevation roadways and mountain passes. Up to 15 inches of snow is forecast for the mountain ranges, particularly the Rubies and Jarbidge mountains. Here are the probabilities of snow in some areas on Tuesday: Elko: 23% Ely: 65% Tonopah: 12% Winnemucca: 12% Spring Creek: 58% Carlin: 19% Owyhee: 35% A ridge will build over our region on Wednesday morning, resulting in dry conditions and warmer temperatures. The break from the action will end on Thursday morning when a low pressure trough moves ashore over the Pacific Northwest, bringing precipitation and gusty winds to northern Nevada. Winds between 15-25 mph and gusts of up to 35 mph are possible with this system. Less precipitation is expected with this system; a trace to 0.5 inches of snow for the lower elevation valleys, 1-2 inches of snow for higher elevation roadways and mountain passes, particularly along State Road 225 near Owyhee. Up to 5 inches of snow is forecast for the mountain ranges. High pressure will move into our area again on Friday morning, and zonal flow will prevail. A shortwave trough may bring a few inches of precipitation to the mountain ranges in far northern Nevada on Saturday, with a trace of snow possible in lower elevations. High pressure will return on Sunday, drying things out. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected at KWMC until early Monday morning, when a frontal passage is forecast to move through the airport, bringing overcast conditions below 3,000 ft and precipitation. VFR conditions are expected at all other terminals for the next 24 hours, as the frontal passage will not reach KEKO or KBAM until later in the day. Strong south to southwest winds at 15-25 kts are being measured at all terminals, with 30-35 kt winds at KWMC. Gusts of up to 40 kts are being measured as well. Gusty winds are expected to continue until this evening, then winds will decrease. KWMC remains AMD NOT SKED due to a communications hardware issue with the ASOS.
