Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Elko NV 348 PM PST Fri Jan 10 2025 Corrected AFD .SYNOPSIS...A cold front and associated trough of low pressure will bring light snow showers to mainly northeastern Nevada tonight into Saturday morning. Most valleys will see snowfall of less than one half inch with several inches in mountainous terrain. Lingering light mountain snow showers are expected Saturday along with colder temperatures for the weekend. Dry conditions and light winds are expected next week as high pressure makes a return over the region. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday Upper-level trough and attendant surface cold front will move through northern Nevada through Saturday morning bringing snow showers to mountains and northeastern Nevada valleys. Probabilities of appreciable snow are low. generally less than 15% in valley areas but up to a 30% of an inch or more along SR-225 between WIldhorse and Owyhee. 2-5 inches are expected in the Ruby mountains and Jarbidge area with lesser amounts confined to mountains in central Nevada. Morning lows in the 20s are expected for Saturday, and highs aren't forecast to reach higher than the upper 30s. Isolated snow showers are expected Saturday afternoon mainly as orographically enhanced snow showers on windward locations. A solid northwest wind will develop tonight across the area as the cold front pushes south. NW winds of 10-20 mph are expected across much of eastern Nevada with some gusts around 30 mph across northeastern Elko county and the higher elevations of central Nevada. Lows Saturday night under less cloud cover are expected drop into the teens across most valleys. .LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday Sunday and Monday...North-northwest flow associated with a short wave disturbance combined with enough mid-level moisture will bring mainly isolated orographic/mountain snow showers to northeast Nevada. Probability of any snow reaches up to 20% in valleys with only a 20% chance of an inch of snow or more in the Jarbidge wilderness area. Otherwise, significant impacts are not expected from precipitation. Temperatures will become colder with highs only in the 20s in northeast Nevada and 30s farther south and west. Lows Monday morning will bottom out in the lower teens with some single digits in favorable sheltered valleys across central and eastern Nevada. Monday night through Thursday...Forecast certainty remains high (with relatively low ensemble member spread) for another Rex block scenario for much of next week setting up over the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies regions during that time. This will result in a very light northeast surface flow with cold mornings reaching down into the single digits Tuesday morning and 30s for highs Tuesday afternoon. Some warming is expected with highs getting into the 40s by Thursday with lows remaining cold in the mornings in the low teens. Friday into the weekend...Dry conditions are likely to prevail through Thursday but some ensemble members along with deterministic GFS and ECMWF do show another trough moving into the northern Rockies by late Friday which could bring another round of snow to mainly northeast Nevada. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected at all terminals through the this evening. An upper-level trough and associated cold front will move into the northern Nevada tonight into Saturday morning. Snow showers are expected to impact the I-80 corridor from KWMC to KBAM to KEKO from 05Z to as late as 09Z overnight. KEKO has the highest chance for impacts, particularly to visibility with MVFR conditions expected at times. Winds just ahead and along the cold front will contain gusts of 20-25 knots at times before subsiding once the front passes. Snow will have a more difficult time making it as far south as KELY with VCSH in place from 09Z to 11Z. Cloud cover will gradually diffuse across the region but could be maintained on northwest/windward slopes of mountain ranges through Saturday but ceilings are likely to be above 3000 feet AGL. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
