Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 1103 AM MST Thu Mar 6 2025 .SYNOPSIS...Rain showers and snow showers will continue to develop and intensify this morning as a winter storm system approaches the region. Precipitation is expected to decrease from west to east this afternoon and evening. Southwest winds will also increase across the area. Widespread rain and snow redevelops again overnight and on Friday, with snow levels as low as 4000 feet. Mild weather returns for the weekend, with potential for more unsettled weather next week. && .UPDATE...Snow is falling across the High Country this morning with some areas having around 1-3" of accumulation so far. We will see some breaks from the precipitation through the day but expect on and off rain and mountain snow showers through this evening. With the strong gusty winds, visibility will also be impacted even if it isn't snowing heavily. Take extra time and be prepared if traveling today. No changes to the headlines needed at this time. Made some minor tweaks to the forecast with this update but otherwise everything looks to be in good shape. && .PREV DISCUSSION /424 AM MST/...A trough of low pressure moving down the West Coast is pushing a cold front across Arizona this morning. Snow showers and rain showers have developed along and west of the I-17/Highway 89 corridor already this morning. The frontal boundary looks to last from 3 to 6 hours at any given location as it moves across the state today. The frontal boundary moves into New Mexico by early afternoon with showers continuing for several hours behind the front. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Kaibab Plateau and Western Mogollon Rim for today. Strong southwest winds have already developed in a few places this morning. The strongest winds today are expected to be north and east of the Mogollon Rim to the Four Corners. A wind advisory is in effect for this area until 600 PM today. The low pressure center off the coast of California will move over San Diego this evening and then eject northeast across Arizona tonight and Saturday. This track has tapped into much deep moisture than previous runs. This has significantly increased the forecast QPF and snow amounts for portions of northern Arizona. The heaviest snowfall looks to be over the Mogollon Rim, Northern Gila County (above 5000 feet), White Mountains and to a lesser extent, the mountains of Northeast Arizona. A winter storm warning has been issued for the southern portions for tonight through Friday...and Friday evening for the White Mountains and an advisory for the Northeast. Snow and blowing snow will make travel difficult at best in these locations. Saturday...The trough exits the region early Saturday with some lingering showers, mainly across the White Mountains. Most areas will see clearing skies and warming temperatures, though with a continued northerly wind it will feel cold and we will still be 5-15 degrees below average. Sunday and Monday... Expect a brief return to pleasant weather after the trough exits and strong high pressure builds. Temperatures warm to near or above climatological averages through the period. Winds will be light on Sunday and begin to ramp up ahead of an approaching trough on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday... This unsettled Spring pattern continues as another trough will impact the region with another round of rain, snow, and wind. Next round of rain/snow will move in after 06Z with flight conditions lowering to IFR between 06Z-12Z and possibly as low as LIFR. Winds SW 20-30kts, gusts 40-45kts this afternoon before easing off to SW 10-20kts overnight and SW 5-10kts Friday. OUTLOOK...Friday 07/18Z through Sunday 09/18Z...MVFR/IFR likely most locations with LIFR possible at KFLG.
