Updated forecast to start the High Wind Warning and Wind Advisory
this morning. Winds speeds continue to increase across the
Guadalupe Mountains with one gust to 58 MPH already observed at
Guadalupe Pass. With the base of the trough evident over the
region on water-vapor imagery, will bring forward product start
times to account for this.

A Pacific Front has begun to slide east through our area as
surface cyclogenesis commences ahead of the trough. We are seeing
a few thunderstorms along the Pacific Front early this morning
with showers back behind the front. This activity will gradually
taper off and exit the region by late morning. In the meantime,
cooler temperatures have started to move into the area as most
locations fall well into the 50s.
Finally, the large trough that has been bringing weather to the
region over the last few days moves out into the southern Great
Plains this afternoon. We quickly see skies beginning to clear as
ascent moves off to the east. Unfortunately, being under the base
of the trough allows strong westerly winds to develop across the
region. The strongest winds will be located near the higher
elevations of the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains where High Wind
Warnings and Wind Advisories are in effect this afternoon through
evening. Light blowing dust may be possible with these winds, but
recent rains and a gradual wind speed increase should limit the
amount of dust lofted.
As the trough continues to push off to the east, a cold front
slides south across the southern Great Plains. This brings even
cooler temperatures into the area and a chilly start to Tuesday
can be expected. Morning temperatures in the 30s across Southeast
New Mexico and the western higher elevations are likely.
Elsewhere, low 40s start off the day. Surface high pressure
quickly settles in during the afternoon. Light winds, sunny skies,
and a seasonal afternoon should be a welcomed sight. Expect
temperatures in the mid 60s to low 70s for the bulk of the
region.

Our next trough is expected to be digging across the Great Basin
by Wednesday. As this occurs, weak ridging and southerly winds
return to the region. Temperatures on Wednesday start warmer in
the 40s for most of the area as a result. Similarly, warming
afternoon temperatures well into the 70s and even low 80s make
their return. These warmer temperatures will be short-lived as our
next cold front is expected to be fast approaching. As our next
trough continues to dig towards the Four Corners, a leading
impulse acts to push a cold front across the region Thursday. Much
cooler temperatures in the 50s and 60s are likely north of I-20,
while the warmer temperatures hold on to the south with 70s and
some 80s. Outside of the cooler weather, rain chances return to
the forecast. Ascent over top the cold front should yield a chance
of showers with a few rumbles of thunder for most of Southeast
New Mexico and the Permian Basin Thursday afternoon through Friday
morning. Outside of these areas, chances look slim for any
meaningful rainfall unfortunately. Friday remains on the cooler
side with the post-frontal airmass holding on for another day. By
the weekend, this trough should be lifting out of the southern
Great Plains, leading to sunnier skies and warmer temperatures. A
pleasant weekend with light winds and widespread temperatures in
the 70s closes out the extended forecast.

VFR conditions are expected for all through the period. A frontal
boundary is currently moving east through the region. Winds become
northwesterly briefly before shifting to a more westerly to
southwesterly component through the morning. A few showers and an
isolated thunderstorm are possible behind the frontal boundary,
mainly at CNM and HOB, but little if any precipitation is
impacting these terminals. Wind speeds increase by late morning
to early afternoon with elevated winds and gusts through the
remainder of the day. Blowing dust may develop, especially out
west, but visibility reductions from this are not expected to
reduce visibility below VFR. Winds gradually weaken late in the
forecast period this evening.
