(Today through Saturday afternoon) Issued at 139 AM CST Fri Dec 13 2024 The weather pattern remains relatively quiet through the short-term. A weather system is expected to progress across the central Great Plains this afternoon. With this track remaining well north of the region, little in the way of weather change is anticipated. Temperatures remain mild this morning with passing high-level clouds and weak southerly winds. Everyone stays above freezing with most falling into the upper 30s and low 40s by sunrise this morning. With the aforementioned weather system, winds will gradually veer to southwesterly and become breezy this afternoon. These winds are not expected to be high enough for any wind products, even over the mountains. Filtered sunshine and these breezy downsloping winds will warm everyone to about 10 degrees above normal into the upper 60s and low 70s this afternoon. Heading into the overnight hours, a weak cold front moves through the region behind the passing weather system as it moves off to the east. This cold front brings clearing skies and light winds behind it, but little in the way of temperatures change. Everyone will be just a few degrees cooler tomorrow morning compared to this morning. The same holds true during the afternoon on Saturday as well. Abundant sunshine will make for a pleasant start to the weekend. -Chehak && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 139 AM CST Fri Dec 13 2024 The short-term forecast is relatively quiet and so will the long- term forecast. Largely westerly or zonal mid-level winds are expected to continue over the southern half of the United States into at least the first half of next week. This pattern is expected to keep above normal temperatures and dry, mostly sunny conditions across the area. Temperatures start warm on Sunday, nearly 15 degrees above normal by the afternoon. Heading into Monday, a weak cold front does decrease temperatures as a weather system passes to the north. Despite the cooler temperatures, most of the region remains 5 to 10 degrees above normal on Monday and much of the same is expected on Tuesday as well. Each night remains mild with everyone continuing with the above freezing temperatures. There is some potential of a minor pattern change heading into the middle of next week. Upper-level troughing is expected to strengthen across the Great Lakes region during this time. Concurrent with this, a weak disturbance is expected to be moving out into the Great Plains. At this time ensemble guidance and cluster analysis are not confident in the exact evolution of this system. With that being said, there is a low (20-40%) chance of a stronger cold front and light rain with this mid-week weather system. In this scenario, temperatures will fall below normal during the afternoon and below freezing temperatures return for portions of the area overnight. This is the current expectation, but the larger pattern favors warmer temperatures across the southern and western United States. A warmer and drier shift in the forecast may be forthcoming as well.
