Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 117 PM PDT Sun Sep 1 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Look for isolated dry thunderstorms in the afternoon and clearing out by tonight. Tomorrow, chances for isolated/scattered dry thunderstorms in the afternoon along with breezy winds. Quiet conditions by mid-week with probabilities of more weather activity returning over the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday This evening, isolated dry thunderstorms over northern Nevada expected to dissipate. Overnight lows in the upper 50s to 60s with light winds. Monday, isolated/scattered dry thunderstorms expected in the afternoon with the highest chances of scattered dry thunderstorms towards eastern Elko County and White Pine County becoming more isolated further west. High temperatures expected in the 90s with overnight lows seeing some cooler temperatures move in from the northwest as a cold front moves in making Humboldt County in the 40s, 50s everywhere else. Winds expected to elevate from the cold front moving in, increasing southerly winds to 15-25 mph with gusts reaching as high as 30 mph. && .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday. Upper level trough is expected to move across the northern Rockies with northern and central Nevada sitting at the southernmost extent of the trough. Winds will be out of the west and southwest during the day, becoming breezy during the afternoon hours with gusts of 15 to 25 mph. Afternoon high temperatures will cool several degrees versus forecast highs for Monday with readings in the upper 70s to mid 80s over the area. Skies are expected to be mostly sunny in the western parts of the forecast area, but sufficient moisture and instability may bring an isolated shower or thunderstorm to portions of eastern Elko and White Pine counties Tuesday afternoon. Dry conditions will remain over the area during the overnight hours with lows in the 40s. By Wednesday and Thursday, models are showing upper level ridging building across the Desert Southwest. This will bring dry and warmer weather through this period with afternoon high temperatures warming to above normal levels. Overnight lows will be in the 40s and 50s and winds will be light. The upper ridge will slide off to the southeast, making way for a weak upper trough on Friday. Southerly flow will bring some mid- level moisture into the area with isolated convective activity possible through the weekend. Highs each afternoon will be in the 80s to near 90 with lows in the 40s and 50s. WInds are expected to be occasionally breezy during this time. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected at all terminals through through the next 24 hours. Mid and upper-level moisture will combine with a low pressure trough will promote mainly dry convection across the eastern half of the forecast area. KBAM, KEKO, and KELY all have about a 15-20% probability of TS. Gusty outflow winds to 40 mph and brief reductions in visibility are possible through the early evening hours due to the thunderstorms. Look for the storm activity to diminish tonight with light winds expected. Another round of isolated thunderstorms are expected to again develop on Monday with outflow gusts to 35KT. && .FIRE WEATHER...Elevated fire conditions tonight for the northern zones as isolated dry thunderstorms continue this evening and dissipate overnight. Winds expected to remain light. Tomorrow, elevated fire conditions for zones 437 and 438 having low RH and elevated winds with small chance for some isolated dry thunderstorms, while zones 469, 470, and 425 expected to have isolated/scattered dry thunderstorms in the afternoon. Elevated winds in the afternoon at 15-20 mph (20-25 mph for zone 437) with gusts as high as 30 mph.
