There was also a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms as well. Some showers along the Sierra above 9000' had the potential to bring a dusting of snow.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 151 AM PDT Sat Aug 24 2024 .SYNOPSIS... * Chances for showers begin this morning and will last though this evening. * We'll have noticeably cooler high temperatures today with light breezes. * A warming trend along with dry conditions are in the forecast to begin Sunday into next week. && .DISCUSSION... Precipitation: A low pressure system moving across Nevada today will spark the chance for some scattered showers starting early this morning. The heaviest showers will be confined north of I-80, however there is roughly a 50-60% chance of showers today along the Sierra crest extending south to Mammoth Lakes. Most of NE CA and W NV will be under a 50-70% chance of showers through this evening with a 20-30% chance of thunder. As showers push east throughout the evening, hi-res models are picking up on a deformation band setting up over central NV, with a little bit of uncertainty in exact placement. If it's further west, Mineral and Churchill counties could see an extra shot of rain (~0.10") tonight around 10 PM PDT. Current QPF totals for this system across northwest NV and NE CA range from 0.15-0.50", with the heaviest of that precip (0.30-0.50") falling in NE CA. The showers along the Sierra above 9000' are likely to produce snow showers, though just a dusting is expected. Temperatures and Wind: High temperatures across the region will take a hit today. It'll feel more like the middle of October with temperatures hanging around the upper 60's across western NV and mid 50's in the Sierra. On the bright side, the atmosphere hasn't forgot that it is still August and temperatures will quickly rebound into the 90's for lower valleys by Tuesday. We'll stay warm for the remainder of the week. Even with this incoming low, winds will be relatively light today, except on Sierra ridges where it will be gusting up to 65 mph. Light winds will persist from Sunday onward. Extended Outlook: After today's active weather, high pressure squeezes its way in and takes control for all of next week. We'll get back into our typical pattern of warm, dry, and sunny. -Justin && .AVIATION... Rain showers have already started to make their way into the region this morning across the Sierra. Throughout this morning and into the early afternoon shower coverage and intensity will increase. The heaviest of the showers will be between 12Z-18Z today. Overall there will be around a 10% chance of showers across all terminals except a 30% chance for KRNO and KTRK. There's a 20-30% chance of lightning for KSVE and KTRK, with a 15% chance for KRNO. LLWS and turbulence will continue to impact the Sierra and surrounding terminals through about 18Z as FL100 winds begin to taper off.
