Significant travel impacts occurred due to a long stretch of icy conditions that resulted from temperatures remaining well below freezing and light to moderate snow showers. Up to two to two and a half feet of snow fell mainly near to west of Grand Rapids from the 12th through the 17th. Numerous traffic accidents and school closings occurred across the area as a result. Wind chill readings plummeted to as low as twenty to thirty degrees below zero late on January 14th and during the morning hours of the 15th.
