northeast into Canada Saturday and Sunday. Weak low pressure
slides to our Monday into Tuesday as cold high pressure drops
into the central U.S.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Strong low pressure lifting out of the mid-Mississippi Valley and
lower Ohio Valley will lift into Michigan tonight while
deepening. This low will reach peak intensity around 12z/7 AM
Saturday, bottoming out around 975mb near Saginaw Bay. This low
pressure will begin to gradually fill and drift east-northeast
on Saturday, with the low lifting into Quebec while continuing
to gradually fill Saturday night. A weak shortwave and
associated surface trough axis will cross through the area
Saturday night in broad cyclonic flow behind the departing low.
A slug of moderate to heavy precipitation will lift across the
area through this evening. Precipitation will trend more showery
later this evening as a dry slot works through, followed by
(very) light wrap-around snow and falling temperatures late
tonight into Saturday.
There will be wind, snow, and cold concerns through Saturday
night due to this system, sectioned out below in more detail:
High Wind:
A strong south-southeast low-level jet is developing and will
ramp up through 7 PM, before beginning to shift east and
gradually out of our area by around midnight. Have already seen
a few higher gusts to near 40 knots just ahead of the shield of
precip spreading in. This low-level jet won't mix down all that
efficiently over the next few hours as the steady precip moves
through. However, as we get into a bit of a dry slot this
evening gusts will increase across the area. Think gusts this
evening will peak at 50-65 MPH in locations near the lakeshore
from Cleveland points northeast due to downslope given 925mb
winds of 50-55 knots...just slightly weaker than what we saw on
Tuesday. Elsewhere, think gusts mainly peak at 40-50 MPH later
this evening in the dry slot. As the cold front sweeps through
we could see a brief period of stronger gusts over 50 MPH
anywhere, particularly if any low-topped showers accompany it
as we saw Wednesday evening.
There will likely be a relative lull in the winds for a few hours
behind the front late this evening though it will still be
"windy" with gusts of 35-45 MPH continuing. Expect gusts to pick
back up from west to east between 4 AM and 10 AM as a push of
stronger cold air advection and stronger winds aloft behind the
departing low wrap in. 850-925mb layer-averaged winds will
increase to 45-55 knots in this window with enough mixing to
bring that down as gusts to the surface. The strongest flow
aloft will be from Northwest and North Central Ohio east-
northeast over Lake Erie and the eastern lakeshore counties.
Winds will begin to gradually weaken into Saturday evening/night
though it will remain rather gusty into Sunday.
Given two windows where stronger wind gusts to 60 MPH are
possible expanded the High Wind Warning to include all but our
southeastern-most counties, where the flow aloft will be a good
5-10 knots weaker than our northern counties. The current
warning alignment matches up very nicely with where the National
Blend of Models (NBM) 50th percentile max gust (basically, the
middle of the ensemble distribution) is 50 knots or higher.
Scattered downed trees and power-outages, along with minor
damage to some structures, can be expected due to the prolonged
period of strong winds through Saturday evening...especially
within the High Wind Warning. The soggy/soft ground also
contributes to concern for uprooted trees. Expiration times are
a bit messy across the board, but do not expect any warning-
criteria gusts after 7 PM Saturday outside of the eastern
lakeshore so have that as the expiration time. Future shifts
will continue to evaluate the end time of those headlines. Would
focus on messaging on when the strongest winds will be as
opposed to when the headlines expire at the moment.
Snow:
The initial slug of precipitation is briefly falling as a mix
of wet- snow and sleet due to a period of evaporational cooling
as it pushes into a somewhat drier antecedent airmass. For most
of us this will quickly go to all rain over the next few hours
with little to no accumulation. An exception is our northwestern
corner where precip is falling as heavy, wet snow and sticking
to roadways. Issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lucas County
through 7 PM to cover impacts to the evening commute.
Surrounding counties (such as Wood, Ottawa and Sandusky) may
also see brief/minor travel impacts, but not enough to warrant
a headline. As this precip pushes into Northwest PA it may also
have an opportunity to briefly fall as all snow and accumulate
an inch or two, especially in the higher terrain east of I-79.
This looks more transient and not quite as intense as what
Toledo is seeing right now, so did not hoist an advisory there.
Rain will change to light wrap-around snow showers tonight into
early Saturday. Snow showers will become focused across the
primary snowbelt by Saturday afternoon. Even in the snowbelt am
not expecting too much snow through Saturday as the bulk of any
lake effect will be directed towards New York. Most of the area
will see an inch or less of wrap-around snow with an inch or two
in the snowbelt. While the snow amount is minimal, slick spots
and blowing snow are possible due to falling temperatures and
the strong winds late tonight into Saturday where any snow does
accumulate.
A shortwave and weak surface trough move through Saturday night,
bringing potential for a light amount of snow area-wide. It will
be cold and windy still, so minor travel impacts are possible
where measurable snow occurs. While the flow will remain
predominantly southwesterly and continue pushing most of the
lake effect towards Buffalo Saturday night there could be a
period of lake-enhanced snow in the primary snowbelt as the
shortwave moves through. Given colder temperatures and gusty
winds this would cause travel impacts even with modest amounts.
Can not rule out a need for an Advisory beginning later Saturday
in a few snowbelt counties (mainly Lake, Ashtabula, and Erie
PA) but confidence is low for now and we have time to continue
to evaluate. Given this, held off for now.
Cold:
Wind chills will dip to 0 to -10 degrees Saturday night across
the entire area, coldest in Northwest Ohio. While not to Wind
Chill Advisory criteria this will be the coldest air of the
winter thus far...so bundle up.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The coldest air of the season so far will be pouring across the
region Sunday morning as the deep, vertically stacked low pressure
system lifts into the vicinity of James Bay leaving behind broad
mid/upper troughing from the northern Plains through the NE U.S.
This will allow a large pool of arctic air to continually be fed
across the region within deep cyclonic flow as the stacked low
slowly retrogrades westward across James Bay through Monday night.
Synoptic snow showers will exit the region quickly Sunday morning as
the best synoptic support lifts northeastward, setting the stage for
mainly lake-effect snow for the rest of the short term period.
From a pattern standpoint, this is a climatologically favorable set-
up for a significant, prolonged lake-effect snow event in the
eastern Great Lakes as the very broad mid/upper trough maintains a
persistent and deep feed of arctic air and the vortex near James Bay
leads to cyclonic westerly flow across the southern and eastern
lakes. However, a strong lake aggregate thermal trough due to the
arctic air wrapping in from the southwest and meeting up with the
warmer lakes will tend to keep the boundary layer flow southwesterly
near Lake Erie. Typically, this southwesterly boundary layer flow
will last longer than high-res guidance indicates and struggles to
veer due to such strong influence from the thermal troughing, and
that is expected to be the case Sunday into Monday night. This will
set up an intense band of snow over the middle of Lake Erie which
will largely impact the Buffalo area and adjacent western NY. We
will need to watch for small movements with the band as subtle
shortwaves ripple through the flow which could bring snow squalls
into the Ashtabula County lakeshore and northern Erie County PA at
times, but confidence is high that the majority will miss our
snowbelt counties. Nevertheless, the weak shortwave disturbances and
moist cyclonic flow within strong cold air advection will bring
occasional snow showers to north central and NE Ohio and NW PA, so
maintained chance PoPs in these areas Sunday through Monday.
Accumulations should only be a trace to up to 1 inch at most, but
again, we will monitor the location of the mega band offshore.
The bigger story will be the very cold temperatures. Highs will only
reach the mid to upper teens in most areas Sunday and Monday with
lows in the single digits Sunday night and Monday night. This
combined with continued wind gusts of 25-30 knots Sunday into Sunday
night and 15-20 knots Monday and Monday night will lead to wind
chills below zero, especially at night. Wind chills will dip to -10
to -15 Sunday night, so will need to monitor for possible wind chill
advisories.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Classic mid winter cold will continue through the extended with
below normal temperatures for mid January as broad mid/upper
troughing remains largely in place from the northern Plains into the
NE U.S. and the mid-level vortex over James Bay gradually
retrogrades into Manitoba through late week. Highs will stay in the
teens Tuesday and Wednesday before moderating slightly into the low
20s by Thursday and Friday. Lows will range from the single digits
to teens each night, so we will need to continue to monitor for
occasional Wind Chill Advisories at night, especially Tuesday
night/early Wednesday behind a reinforcing shortwave trough.
In terms of snow chances, the persistent supply of arctic air within
deep cyclonic westerly to southwesterly flow will keep lake-effect
snow showers going downwind of Lake Erie. It may continue to mostly
impact western NY, but a period of westerly flow behind the
aforementioned shortwave Tuesday evening into early Wednesday could
bring some accumulating snow into at least extreme NE Ohio and NW PA
before the flow shifts back southwesterly. This is again possible
Thursday night into Friday behind another shortwave. Also expanded
PoPs with these waves as synoptic support could bring a little light
snow areawide. So all in all, a very cold pattern, but not alot of
snow for most.

.AVIATION /18Z Friday THROUGH Wednesday/...
A strong low pressure system approaches from the southwest today
and moves into Michigan tonight, bringing rain and wind to the
region this afternoon and tonight. The leading edge of
precipitation lifts northeast across the area late this
afternoon/evening, with MVFR/IFR ceilings and IFR (potentially
LIFR) visibilities concurrent with the onset and continuation of
rainfall. Could see a bit of snow mix in across interior
Northeast Ohio, far Northeast Ohio, and Northwestern PA at the
onset and have this included in a few sites. Out of the TAF
sites, TOL seems most at risk for a quick burst of snow before
changing back to rain. Conditions improve to MVFR across the
board 0-4z from west to east as steadier rain exits. Light
wrap-around snow showers wrap in late tonight into Saturday. Not
expecting heavy snow, though lake enhancement may contribute to
a period of more moderate snow along the eastern lakeshore,
including ERI. Any snow that falls will blow around and bring
MVFR to perhaps brief IFR visibility, though it generally looks
light outside of any lake enhancement.
Impactful winds are expected with this low pressure system today
and tonight. Winds begin increasing out of the southeast late
this morning, peaking this evening (between 22Z/Fri - 04Z/Sat)
at 20-25 knots sustained with gusts as high as 45 knots. It is
possible that there could be pockets of stronger wind gusts and
one spot that this very likely is Erie County PA where
downsloping winds could enhance the southeast flow to 50+ kts,
especially 23Z-02Z. Winds gradually shift to out of the
southwest late tonight. Gusts likely lull into the 30-40 knot
range overnight, before coming back up to 40-50 knots beginning
around 12z/7am Saturday area-wide.
Elected to add a brief period of low-level wind shear to several
TAF sites late this afternoon or this evening during the
steadiest precipitation. The low-level jet will really ramp up
during this time, and steadier precipitation will likely
stabilize the low-levels enough to keep the winds from mixing
well...hence the LLWS risk. As steadier precip exits mixing
should improve later this evening.
Outlook...Snow showers on Saturday transition to lake effect
snow across the primary snow belt of Northeast Ohio and
Northwest Pennsylvania Saturday night and Sunday. Snow showers
are possible again areawide on Tuesday.

.MARINE...
The lake will be very active tonight through Sunday with multiple
headlines as a deep low pressure system passing across Michigan and
Ontario late tonight and Saturday brings high winds and battering
waves. S to SE winds will continue to increase to over 30 knots this
evening with gusts to 50 knots at times, before veering SW late
tonight and Saturday morning behind an occluded cold front. The SW
winds will then increase to 35 to 50 knots with gusts up to 60 knots
late Saturday morning through the evening as strong cold air
advection mixes down 60 knot winds around 850 mb. The mixing of
these strong winds combined with a long southwesterly fetch is a
very favorable set up for winds to end up stronger than expected, so
upgraded to Storm Warnings for the central and eastern basins. Kept
the Gale Warnings this evening through 14Z Saturday for the
aforementioned S to SE winds, but upgraded the central and eastern
basins to Storm Warnings from 14Z Saturday onward into Sunday. The
western basin could get close to storm force winds briefly Saturday
morning/early afternoon, but it's more likely that they just fall
short, so kept the Gale through Saturday there. This will generate
waves as high as 15-20 feet in the central and eastern basin. The
strongest winds will be Saturday afternoon into the evening, but
winds will only gradually subside Saturday night and Sunday, so ran
the Storm Warnings into Sunday with the possibility of early
downgrades back to Gale Warnings.
Winds will continue to decrease Sunday night, but W to SW winds will
remain at least 15-25 knots with higher gusts through Wednesday, so
a prolonged period of Small Craft Advisories is likely. The next
period of strongest winds (perhaps up to 30 knots) will be Tuesday
night into Wednesday.

At 6:39 PM a CWOP weather station measured a 59 MPH wind gust in Wickliffe. Trees and power-lines were downed, knocking out power to over 3000 customers in the county.
Around 6:30 PM power-lines were downed in Claridon Township due to strong winds, causing a small brush fire. At around the same time, a large tree fell onto a house in Auburn Township, causing some damage to the home’s roof, gutters, and porch. Strong winds knocked down trees and power-lines, causing over 2000 customers to lose power in the county.
At 6:10 PM, Burke Lakefront Airport measured a 59 MPH wind gust. A 61 MPH wind gust was measured by a CWOP station in Parma at 7:20 PM. These wind gusts downed trees and power-lines across the county. On Memphis Avenue in Cleveland, a large tree fell onto a parked car. Several trees were reported downed in Lakewood around 6:45 PM, including on Cranford, Grace, Arthur, Winchester, Maile and Riverside roads. On Grace Road, a large tree fell onto a house, causing significant damage. At around 8:30 PM, a tree was downed onto a car and blocking a street in West Park. Over 6000 customers lost power across the county.
At 7:22 PM Ashtabula County regional airport measured a wind gust of 61 MPH. Trees and power-lines were downed, knocking out power to over 5000 customers in the county.

At 1:39 PM, a CWOP weather station measured a 60 MPH wind gust in Arcadia. Findlay Airport also reported a 55 MPH wind gust at 12:17 PM. These strong winds caused some tree damage and power-outages.
At 7:14 AM, Toledo Executive Airport measured a 59 MPH wind gust. These strong winds caused some tree damage and power-outages.
At 10:00 AM a 61 MPH wind gust was measured in Fairport. These strong winds caused some tree damage and power-outages.
At 9:05 AM, a CWOP weather station measured a 64 MPH wind gust in Parma. At 9:21 AM, Burke Lakefront Airport measured a 59 MPH wind gust. At 10:03 AM, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport measured a 61 MPH wind gust. These strong winds caused some tree damage and power-outages.
