What happened

The episode as NWS RNK wrote it up.

A portion of central Virginia received between 25 and 40 percent of the normal rainfall from the beginning of October through much of November, resulting in an expansion of Severe Drought conditions into this area. The lack of rainfall contributed to a gradual decrease in river and creek stream flows, groundwater and soil moisture across the northwest portion of the state. Impacts on remaining crop harvest were minimal given the growing season had ended with the onset of cooler weather. However, one notable impact was a lack of growth of pasture grasses, forcing ranchers to begin feeding hay to livestock more so and/or earlier than they normally might. The threat of Wildland fire activity was increased during the month given the combination of dry fuels and the seasonal loss of leaf cover/canopy which allowed surface fuels to dry out more readily.

.SYNOPSIS...
The coldest air of the season will arrive overnight into
Wednesday, with temperatures plummeting and winds increasing. A
few snowflakes will be possible for the mountains. Subfreezing
temperatures are expected for the next several nights, resulting
in a widespread freeze and an end to the growing season.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 832 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

1.Freeze Warnings issued where the growing season is still in
effect. Hard freeze in the mountains.

2.Light snow possible overnight into Wednesday, mainly for the
mountains of West Virginia. Flurries are possible downwind.

Upper trough axis located to our west this evening will rotate east
tonight and push off the Atlantic coast by Wednesday night. A cold
front in the Ohio valley will travel east tonight into Wednesday
with reinforcing shot of cold air. The coldest air of the season
will arrive overnight into Wednesday. Winds overnight will increase
and gust into the 25-35 mph range, leaving wind chills feeling like
0 to 15F in the mountains, and in the low 20s for the piedmont.
Outside of the highest ridge tops, winds should remain below wind
advisory criteria. Thus, have opted to not issue a Winds Advisory.
Clouds will linger in the west overnight into Wednesday afternoon,
while downsloping clearing expected in the east. Scattered snow
showers are possible across parts of Southeast West Virginia and a
few snow flurries may push into the mountains. However, snowfall
amounts will be only a trace for most, given the very cold and dry
air mass in place. Snowfall accumulations should average less than
an inch, even in western Greenbrier county.

It will be cold on Wednesday with highs from subfreezing to around
40 degrees for the mountains, and in the mid 40s to near 50 degrees
for the piedmont. Happy halloween !

Confidence in the near term forecast is moderate.

Previous:

As of 539 PM EDT Tuesday...

Made some minor adjustments to temperatures for this evening
into tonight utilizing the latest surface obs, their trends and
blended in the NBM. The coldest air of the season will arrive
overnight into Wednesday. Current freeze warnings seem
reasonable for tonight into Wednesday morning. More changes
later tonight.

Previous discussion:
As of 100 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

1. Terrifyingly cold weather on the way! Trick-or-treating weather
will be in the 30s and 40s, with winds picking up, so go early!

2. Hard freeze for the mountains, mild freeze for the piedmont
Wednesday morning. Freeze Warnings issued where the growing season
is still in effect.

3. Light snow possible overnight into Wednesday, mainly for the
mountains of WV. Flurries possible downwind.

A closed low and trough axis centered over Chicago will remain
positively tilted as it transitions to an open wave and meanders
east tonight, pushing off the Atlantic coast by Wednesday
night. A secondary surge of shiver-inducing cold air will arrive
tonight. Temperatures differences from 24 hours ago at 1 PM
today ranged from about 20 to a whopping 35 degrees colder.
These numbers indicate a continental Arctic air mass, with the
freezing level only a couple thousands feet high and dropping
with time. Easterly winds have helped tuck a transient wedge of
high pressure in along the Appalachians, however a very large
and dense area of high pressure builds in from the west, along
with the cold air, supporting NW winds development overnight,
and weakening the wedge.

We remain cloudy with plenty of dense cold air stratus around.
These clouds will begin to clear overnight, but only for the
piedmont, as the NW downsloping winds strengthen. For the
mountains, stratus will lift some but will hang on through
midday Wednesday, trapped as it is under the low to mid level
inversion.

While we will see scattered snow showers across parts of SE WV,
with the wind carrying snow flurries well into the foothills
(Blacksburg, perhaps Roanoke). However, snowfall amounts will be
only a trace for most, given the very cold and dry air mass in
place. Snowfall accumulations should average less than an inch.

Tonight, overnight lows will be ghoulishly frigid, in the low to
mid 20s for the mountains, and the upper 20s to low 30s for
the piedmont. A Freeze Warning is in place for all areas that
have not officially frozen yet, which is most of the area.
Remember to bring sensitive plants (and pets!) in as this will
be a widespread freeze. Exposed water pipes will be in danger of
freezing if not properly insulated. Winds overnight will begin
to pick up and gust into the 25-35 mph range, leaving wind
chills feeling like 0 to 15F in the mountains, and in the low
20s for the piedmont. Winds remain just short of wind advisory
criteria.

Wednesday will be even colder than today, with highs subfreezing
to around 40 for the mountains, and in the 40s to near 50 for
the piedmont.

Confidence in the near term forecast is moderate.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 110 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key Messages:

  - Hard Freeze for Wednesday night ending growing season

  - Gradual warming trend begins Thursday night

  - Little to no probability of precipitation

500 MB pattern flattens by Thursday and remains zonal through the
end of the week. At the surface, high pressure and the associated
unseasonably cold air mass will be centered over the central
Appalachians by Thursday morning. As a result the wind will decouple
after sunset and temperatures will drop sharply Wednesday evening.
Minimum temperatures Wednesday night will be at or near record
levels.

Gradual warming begins Thursday night and Friday. Highs on Friday
will be near normal and by Friday night 850MB temperatures are back
up to around +8.

A low pressure system passing across the Ohio Valley will bring some
mid and high clouds to southeast West Virginia and the Alleghany
Highlands on Thursday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 110 PM EDT Tuesday...

Key message:

-Next chance of precipitation arrives Tuesday

Surface high pressure moves offshore over the weekend. This leaves
the region in southwest surface and low level flow. Synoptic scale
models were in good agreement through Sunday.

Low pressure over the Ohio or Tennesse Valley may be approaching the
Mid Atlantic area on Tuesday. Confidence in the timing and location
of this system is low at this time.

&&
