Hail and Damaging Winds in Texas, October 4, 2023
Widespread severe storms affected portions of the South Plains and Rolling Plains on the afternoon of the fourth supported by unseasonably warm temperatures and strong instability. The instability fueled numerous thunderstorms, some which were severe and produced torrential rainfall near and ahead of a cold front.

Widespread severe storms affected portions of the South Plains and Rolling Plains on the afternoon of the fourth supported by unseasonably warm temperatures and strong instability. The instability fueled numerous thunderstorms, some which were severe and produced torrential rainfall near and ahead of a cold front. The most intense storms generated very large hail, as big as three inches in diameter near Reese Center (Lubbock County). A supercell thunderstorm tracked from Cochran County through Crosby County dumping a swath of very large hail across northern Lubbock County.

Numerous reports were received of a large swath of hail from a supercell thunderstorm that moved east over central Lubbock County. The swath of hail began just east of the Lubbock/Hockley County line along Texas Highway 114 and tracked eastward to east Loop 289 on the northeast side of Lubbock. Hail ranged in size from quarters to as large as three inches in diameter.
