The trend of excessive heat shows little signs of slowing down with
barely any change to the overall synoptic pattern in the immediate
term. Latest surface observations (3PM CDT) indicate peak heat index
values so far today reaching the 107-112 range, with several
locations reporting high temperatures in the triple digits this
afternoon. With the dominant midlevel ridge continuing to reside
over much of the Southern CONUS while light to moderate onshore
winds prevail at the surface, heat and humidity remain the main
concern heading into tomorrow.
Overnight lows this evening will struggle to drop much below 80, if
at all, with winds becoming light and variable throughout the course
of the night. Our main concern in the short term period is of course
the potential for excessive heat tomorrow with the prevailing ridge
remaining largely the same in terms of both position and magnitude.
The afternoon forecast update has warranted the issuance of an
Excessive Heat Warning for portions of the area, particularly areas
well north of I-10 and well to the east of I-45 where temperatures
could reach up to 105 and heat indicies could reach around 113 at
times during the afternoon tomorrow. Efficient daytime mixing should
result in another drop of dew point values heading into the
afternoon into the upper 60s/lower 70s, but air temperatures should
nonetheless remain quite high. A Heat Advisory has been extended
through at least tomorrow evening for the remainder of the area,
where inland highs in the triple digits and heat index values of up
to 112 are expected. There remains a very isolated chance for a pop
up storm or two to develop along the coast, but any activity (if at
all) should remain offshore. Overnight lows tomorrow night will
again largely sit in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
As has been the case for the last several weeks now, heat should
continue to be taken seriously and anyone with outdoor plans should
exercise heat safety precautions.

No major changes planned with the extended forecast as the broad mid/
upper ridge (centered around the Big Bend) lingers across much of the
southern CONUS through the period. There does appear to be some minor
east-west wobbles with this feature by the start of next week, and it
could translate to slightly higher POPs (20% vs 10%) by next Tues/Wed
(should this verify). Otherwise, the main forecast issue for SE TX is
going to be the continuation of the seemingly unrelenting hot weather
through the long term part of the package. Still cannot rule out some
isolated activity each day with the seabreeze, but much of the CWA is
going to stay dry. High temperatures will remain in upper 90s to low-
er 100s range each day which should translate to heat index values at
to very near Heat Advisory criteria for each day as well. Please stay
vigilant regarding heat safety as this pattern continues. 41

1 to 3 feet. Small craft might need to exercise caution during the
evening/overnight periods when winds could increase slightly. Iso-

While we remain below Red Flag criteria as the forecast currently
stands, very hot and relatively dry conditions will continue to
produce elevated fire weather conditions in the coming days. While
winds remain fairly light, expanding drought conditions have also
left the area with relatively dry fuels. As such, many local counties
have enacted burn bans in recent days. Be sure to heed the orders
issued by your local authorities.
