Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 353 PM EDT Sun Sep 10 2023 .SYNOPSIS... A weak surface front will remain across our area before dissipating or shifting offshore later Monday into Tuesday. A stronger cold front approaches Tuesday and then crosses our region Wednesday. High pressure then builds in Thursday and remains in place through Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... The main focus through tomorrow will be on the mid and upper level trough which will be weakening and filling as it progresses further northeast into our region and eventually northeast of us by late tomorrow. Because this is filling and weakening, any lift is expected to be quite weak, and there will be limited low level convergence even along the stationary front. The consequence of all this is that shower and thunderstorm coverage should be considerably more limited through Monday than what we saw Friday and Saturday. An important note that CAMs tend to poorly depict the coverage and evolution of showers and storms in weakly forced environments. Consequently, for the forecast I've generally broad brushed a mention of a chance of showers and storms through the period, but am not expecting this to be a washout period. The primary hazards with showers and storms through this period will be heavy rain and lightning. We remain in a humid air mass, so localized downpours will remain possible. Instability is more limited than what we have seen recently, but still more than enough for isolated thunderstorms/lightning. That being said the limited instability should be a limiting factor for severe wind and hail potential. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The weak surface stationary boundary that remained across our region for the last couple of days will begin to dissipate or shift offshore during the time frame of Monday night. While this will result in a short lull from precipitation potential with showers, a stronger cold front will be approaching our region from the west Tuesday and Tuesday night. There remains some disagreement among guidance on exactly when this cold front will begin to pass through the region, but the front should be on our doorstep or just beginning to cross through by Wednesday morning. It is expected that Tuesday night and Wednesday will be the main time frame for which we see impacts from the cold front. Monday night will see a lull in precipitation potential as the weak stationary boundary continues to weaken and push offshore. No PoPs are included for the period. However, it is anticipated that fog will develop across the region as we remain in a moist airmass and overnight temperatures cool to dewpoints with calm/light winds. Overnight lows in the 60s with similar dewpoints can be expected. With the the cold front approaching Tuesday and Tuesday night, some shortwave energy may be present ahead of the front. This coupled with some added instability from daytime heating will lead to the chance of some showers developing for the afternoon time frame; slight chance and chance PoPs are in the forecast. For Tuesday night into Wednesday, the main precipitation impact from the stronger cold front is anticipated; likely and categorical PoPs are included in the forecast. With the time frame of main impact from shower/thunderstorms being overnight into Wednesday, severe thunderstorms are currently not anticipated as total instability will not be aided by peak daytime heating. However, it should be noted that if the cold front does not move with the anticipated speed (e.g., slower) such that the main shower/thunderstorm line moves through the region when there is decent access to daytime heating (e.g., Wednesday afternoon) the forecast may change. For now, the main impact we will need to watch for is potential localized flooding from any heavy downpours. WPC maintains much of the region in a SLIGHT risk for excessive rainfall for both periods. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... The long term period is looking to be rather quiet compared to what we have been seeing as of late. However, we are still watching Hurricane Lee closely for any changes to the forecast. Most of the latest (i.e., 12z) deterministic and ensemble based guidance today keeps Lee way offshore to our east through the long term. Canadian high pressure with cooler and drier air will follow behind the cold front moving further offshore Wednesday night. This surface high pressure will continue to build in for Thursday and strongly influence our region Thursday night through Saturday as it drifts eastward. With Lee way to our east/northeast Sunday, high pressure conditions may even persist through the end of the weekend, though the surface high will look to be weakening by this time frame. Will include some slight chance and chance PoPs in the forecast Wednesday night with the front pushing offshore. Thereafter, there are no PoPs in the forecast for the rest of the long term period. Thursday and Friday will look to be beautiful days with high temperatures in the 70s and very comfortable relative humidities. Saturday may be a bit warmer, but will still be pretty nice with high pressure conditions. Overall, temperatures will look to mainly run below average for the long term. It should be anticipated at this point that the long term period will see prolonged coastal impacts from Hurricane Lee's northward track. A prolonged period of larger swells, larger wave heights, and dangerous rip currents is nearly certain for our region for much of the long term. && .AVIATION /20Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Rest of Today...Still expecting predominantly VFR conditions, with visibility and ceiling restrictions in the vicinity of any showers and storms. That being said, lower ceilings have developed over KRDG and KABE. Expect these ceilings to be transient through the afternoon, so have covered with a tempo group at both sites. As far as thunderstorm potential, coverage is too limited to mention in the TAFs at this point, but the highest risk looks to be at KMIV and KACY. Wind favoring the south to east quadrant 8 knots or less. Gusty and variable winds will be possible in the vicinity of any stronger storms. The TAF sites most at risk for this are KILG, KACY, and KMIV. Low confidence on details including timing and direct impacts of SHRA and TSRA. Tonight...Starting VFR. It is appearing more likely that MVFR and even IFR ceilings will develop for most TAF sites including KPHL, KPNE, KILG, KTTN, KRDG, and KABE. Less confident that KMIV and KACY will see low ceilings, but that may just set the stage for localized visibility restrictions in BR especially at KMIV. Scattered showers will be possible overnight, but coverage is too limited to mention in the TAFs at this time. Variable wind 5 knots or less. Moderate confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on any details. Monday...Once the lower ceilings and fog dissipate by 15Z, should see mostly VFR conditions. However, scattered showers and storms could result in brief visibility and ceiling restrictions. However, coverage is expected to be even more limited on Monday, so no mention in the TAFs at this time. Winds light and variable. Moderate confidence on most aspects of the forecast, but low confidence on the timing of the return to VFR conditions. Outlook... Monday night...Generally VFR before fog development in the latter half of the period may drive sites down to MVFR/IFR visibilities. Light and variable winds. Low confidence. An underlying very long period southeasterly swell (around 15 to 17 seconds) is forecast to arrive. However, we will keep the mention of a LOW risk of rip currents since the breaking waves should be relatively tame. A variable wind 5 to 10 MPH on Monday morning is expected to become southerly in the afternoon along the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey. Breaking waves are forecast to be around 2 feet with an underlying long period southeast swell (around 12 to 14 seconds).
