A low pressure system kicked off scattered thunderstorms across Northeastern Pennsylvania. The environment was unstable to support some severe thunderstorms in Luzerne County. These storms had strong winds that knocked down trees, with one landing on a house.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Binghamton NY 333 PM EDT Tue Jun 27 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure moving through continues to keep the threat for afternoon showers and thunderstorms region wide. High pressure builds in Wednesday night into Thursday with a break from precipitation for the end of the week before showers return for the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... 330 PM Update... So far showers and thunderstorms are just starting to fire across CNY while showers and thunderstorms have been persistent across the Poconos for a few hours. Surface based CAPE is getting above 1500 J/kg with not much CIN. An upper level trough axis is also moving through this afternoon with a weak surface low just to the north. Showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage this afternoon into the early evening. Shear is weak, with bulk shear below 20 knots region wide outside of the eastern Catskills. Given the higher CAPE there is a chance a few storms could pulse up and get a good core for some isolated damaging wind gusts but nothing organized is expected. With recent rains across Delaware County south into the eastern Poconos, the soil is near saturation so additional rain will need to be watched this afternoon and evening with the flood watch continuing into this evening. With the trough axis swinging through tonight, high pressure begins to build in from the west tomorrow. A weak shortwave dropping into Northern NY in the late morning into early afternoon will keep higher chances of showers and thunderstorms across CNY into the Catskills. Cooler air aloft will keep high temperatures cooler with highs in the low 70s and upper 60s. Given the northerly flow on the back side of the trough axis, it is likely that some smoke from the Canadian fires will move in. An air quality alert has been issued by the NY DEC for most of the region for tomorrow and may have to be extended beyond midnight tomorrow. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... 320 PM Forecast... Surface high pressure will move over the region on Thursday and upper trough/low exits to the northeast. Bulk of the region should remain dry Thursday, with a slight chance for showers only in the eastern Catskills Thursday afternoon. After the upper trough/low passes...flow will remain NW'erly Thursday morning before turning SW'erly later in the day with high pressure building in. With the NW flow in the morning, it is possible smoke from wildfires in Quebec remains over the area for at least the first half of the day Thursday, but it should start to clear later in the day. I did pull down high temperatures a few degrees from NBM, as any smoke will limit solar heating, but this is highly dependent on when the smoke will exit the area. High pressure and dry conditions should persist Thursday night with dry conditions into Friday. High pressure will shift east on Friday and warm SW return flow will bring moisture and warm conditions back into the region. Unfortunately, another upper trough/low will push SE out of Canada late Friday. This will bring a return to unsettled conditions for the weekend...more on that below. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... 325 PM Forecast... Another showery and unsettled weekend is in store for the region. A upper level low sitting north of the Great Lakes will eject several shortwave troughs into the region Saturday and Sunday. Although NBM keeps PoPs through the entire period, it is likely that we see similar conditions to this past weekend. Shower and thunderstorm chances will be highest during the afternoon and early evening period. This situation will have to be monitored as modeled instability and shear are showing a non- zero chance of severe weather as well. GFS continues to have this upper trough/low linger into the 4th of July, however the Euro pulls the upper east of the area on Monday, pushing widespread rain showers out of the region. Due to the uncertainty this far out in the forecast, decided to stay with the NBM solution, which gives a small chance for diurnal rain showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop. && .AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Chance of thunderstorms this afternoon at all terminals. Storms will be scattered so intermittent impacts are expected and tempos have been added for the rough timing of the storms. AVP had two tempos as thunderstorms around the terminal right now will dissipate with more forming later after a few hours. Low cigs move in tonight and it will be slow to rise tomorrow. Outlook...
