.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaching from the west arrives late afternoon
and into the evening, followed by an area of high pressure for
tonight. Our midweek storm system begins to take shape across
the central US, lifting a warm front near our region by late
Wednesday. The boundary is forecast to settle across the
forecast area Wednesday night into Thursday. Another cold front
from the west is expected to arrive on Thursday night with high
pressure arriving in its wake for Friday into Saturday. A cold
front and strengthening low pressure approaching from the west
may impact our weather on Sunday or Monday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A disturbance is forecasted to bring more precipitation to the
region this afternoon. Though this precipitation should not
carry anything too impressive QPF wise, this precipitation
associated with another boundary has the potential to carry
impacts along with it. There is indication within guidance that
elevated convection may be allowed to take place, allowing for
the possibility of thunder and small hail/graupel. The biggest
concern will be wind gusts. Guidance indicates a well mixed
layer with the potential for near 40 mph gusts to mix down to
the surface, especially for the western most of our PA counties
(i.e., Berks/Chester). By 22z most impacts should cease as
precipitation moves away from the region though some near 20 to
25 knot gusts could persist thereafter.

For tonight high pressure looks to wedge in; clear skies with
diminishing WNW winds will be the story of the period.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Surface high pressure over the area early Wednesday will
retreat eastward off the coast through the day. As the surface
high moves farther off the coast, warm advection will develop in
its wake ahead of a potent weather system approaching from the
middle part of the country. The warm air will override the low
level cold air anchored to our north resulting in a widespread
variation in temperatures in our region as we head into
Thursday.

Precipitation is anticipated to advect into our region from the
west and southwest on Wednesday. It will take some time to
moisten the lower layers of the atmosphere over our region.
However, by late afternoon the precipitation should reach most
areas including the Poconos and far northern New Jersey. While
it should be rain at most locations, enough cold air is expected
for some light snow, sleet or a wintry mix at the onset in the
Lehigh Valley, the Poconos and northern New Jersey.

Temperatures will actually warm into Wednesday night changing
precip to all rain near the I-78 corridor (with periods of rain
continuing farther south) with the wintry mix to the north
becoming mainly freezing rain for a time over the southern
Poconos and potentially into Sussex County NJ as well. Even here
in these northern areas temperatures are expected to eventually
rise above freezing by later Wednesday night or early Thursday
as an initial wave of low pressure moves across northern PA
causing winds to turn southerly. Before this changeover occurs
though, potential still exists for some locations above 1000
feet in the Poconos and NW NJ to receive around or in excess of
a tenth of an inch ice accumulation.

As the initial wave of energy moves east of the area early
Thursday, steadier precip should shut down with it mainly
looking like a dry day. The main forecast challenge and weather
story of the day will be the sharp divide in temperatures. This
is because as the initial area of low pressure moves off to the
east it could drag the front slightly farther back to the south
leading it to set up near NE PA into northern NJ. South of where
it sets up, expect highs soaring into the mid 60s to mid 70s
range while to the north it will stay in the 40s. This makes for
a very tricky forecast as there is some uncertainty in exactly
where the front will be with the gradient across it being very
strong. The overall trend has been towards a more northern storm
track with this system but the concern I have is the
combination of the strong high to the north and the initial wave
moving east of the area early Thursday may tend to keep the
surface front hung up over northern NJ into NE PA. For this
reason, we are forecasting temperatures a bit colder than the
model consensus here with highs over our northern NJ zones
likely staying in the 40s to low 50s. Coastal NJ should
experience similar temperatures as well due to onshore winds.
Elsewhere, expect highs soaring into the 60s to mid 70s over
interior southern NJ, SE PA, and Delmarva. These warmer areas
will also see some sunshine developing while near the front
farther north it will remain mostly cloudy and there could be
some showers around.

Thursday night, the main area of low pressure passes by to our
north as it moves from the lower Great Lakes eastward towards
New England. This keeps most of the area in the warm sector for
the majority of the night with temperatures through most of the
night in the 40s and 50s. Other than a continuing chance for a
few showers over NE PA into NW NJ closer to the track of the low
it should be a precip free night as the main shield of precip
will be north of the area.

Things change by very late Thursday night into early Friday as
the low passes east of New England dragging a strong cold front
southward through the area. This will result in temperatures
actually falling through the day Friday due to the strong cold
advection pattern. Early in the day (pre-sunrise) it will still
be in the 40s and 50s with temperatures then falling through the
morning and generally ranging from the 30s to mid 40s by mid
afternoon with 20s in the southern Poconos. The falling
temperatures will also be accompanied by very strong winds due
to a strong pressure gradient behind the departing system.
Expect NW winds 20 to 30 gusting at least 30 to 40 mph.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Cold high pressure is forecast to slide across New England
Friday night and begin shifting off the Northeast Coast during
the day Saturday. Robust cold air advection and a very dry
airmass (dewpoints in the single digits) Friday night will allow
overnight low temps to drop slightly below average, with upper
teens to mid 20s for the coastal plains and low to mid teens for
higher elevations! A disorganized low will begin developing
along a frontal boundary across Tennessee and North Carolina,
but with high pressure to our north and a cold, dry airmass in
place will likely keep the Delaware Valley mostly dry on
Saturday. Have decreased precip chances to reflect the continued
dry trend in deterministic guidance, but have maintained the
mention of a slight chance to chance of precipitation in the
event that the models trend back the other way. Afternoon high
temps Saturday will be below climo as well, with mid to upper
30s for the coastal plains and upper 20s to low 30s for higher
elevations.

There remains a fair amount of spread in the guidance for
Sunday into Monday. In general for Sunday, our disorganized
southern low Saturday will strengthen offshore, though guidance
disagrees if any precip will reach our forecast area. High
pressure looks to move overhead Sunday night and during the day
Monday before a fairly potent system developing across the
central US moves closer to the Northeast Monday night. At this
time, there are still significant timing differences with this
system and decided to stick close to NBM guidance.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...Lingering MVFR/IFR conditions around KRDG,
KABE, KTTN and KPNE early this afternoon. Mainly VFR at KPHL,
KILG, KMIV and KACY. A cold front is forecast to move eastward
across the TAF sites between about 18Z and 21Z bringing showers
and lowering conditions. The showers may also be accompanied by
wind gusts around 35 knots, small hail and isolated thunder.
Clearing is anticipated after the front passes. West southwest
wind increasing to around 10 knots, then shifting to the west
northwest after the cold front passes with speeds of 10 to 15
knots and gusts of 20 to 25 knots. Medium confidence.

Tonight...VFR. Northwest wind around 10 knots, becoming
variable 5 knots or less after midnight. High confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR in the morning. Conditions then lowering in the
afternoon with the arrival of rain. These restrictions should
continue Wednesday night. Variable wind 5 knots or less,
becoming east to southeast 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence.

Thursday...Lingering MVFR/IFR conditions are possible in the
morning with a chance of rain, then conditions improving to VFR.
Southwest wind increasing to 10 to 15 knots. Medium confidence.

Friday...Mainly VFR. Northwest wind around 20 knots with gusts
of 30 to 40 knots. Medium to high confidence.

Friday night...Mainly VFR. Breezy NNW winds 15 to 20 knots turn
north overnight and diminish to 5 to 10 knots. Medium
confidence.

Saturday...Mainly VFR. NE wind 5 to 10 knots, becoming south
around 10 knots. Medium confidence.

Sporadic minor tree damage was observed west of Interstate 295. A continuous path of tree damage was observed near Lawrence Station Road, particularly in a housing development along Fountayne Lane. Additional tree damage and damage to roofing occurred in a housing development at Lawrence Square. Estimated maximum wind speeds in this area were 105-115 MPH. In a straight line from this damage, there was roofing damage at a residence and a commercial building as well as additional tree damage along Quaker Bridge Road. Tree damage continued at a park across the street and through the 2nd and 11th holes at the adjacent golf course. Additional sporadic tree damage occurred in residential areas east of the golf course in West Windsor Township. The last tree damage was observed near the intersection of Old Trenton Road and Village Road.
