Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 330 PM PST Sat Mar 4 2023 .SYNOPSIS...Active weather is expected to continue through the weekend with breezy conditions holding into tonight. Scatter off and on showers will look to follow for the start of the new week, with potential for more widespread activity near its end. Otherwise, look for high temperatures to be cooler than normal. && .UPDATE...Latest ground sensors have begun to report both cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes from the cell just northeast of Pine Valley. Forecast has been updated to reflect new potential for convective systems capable of producing thunder- snow. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 136 PM PST Sat Mar 4 2023/ SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday. Latest radar and satellite imagery is continuing to see showers move across the region with light accumulations being seen across Northern Nevada. Showers should continue to spread throughout the day and overnight hours with models expecting moisture to continue to be fed into the region by the closed upper-level low to the northwest. Accumulation will eventually add up for the region with valley running into the 1 to 3 inch range by Sunday night and mountains potentially reaching above the 6 inch mark. Winds will also look to pick up today with models still on track for an upper-level jet streak to move over the region later this evening. Strongest winds are still expected to be found in the western portion of the region with Wind Advisories currently in place for Humboldt, Lander, and Eureka counties. There is a chance of blowing durst to be present in both Humboldt and western Lander counties, given the Carson Sink has remain dry this past week. However, blowing and drifting snow are the more likely option to follow this uptick in both winds and snow which, in turn, will create areas of reduced visibility throughout overnight. For Lander, Eureka, and White Pine counties as well as a majority of Elko county, a combinations of snowfall as well as blowing/drifting snow will likely result in difficult travel conditions throughout the weekend. With this in mind, Winter Weather Advisories are in place for these locations until 6 pm Sunday evening. Otherwise, look for temperatures to remain cold with this system passage. Expect afternoon high temperatures to sit mostly in the 20s and 30s for the days with overnight lows in the teens and single digits for tonight and tomorrow. LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Saturday A trough of low pressure off the coast of the Pacific NW will be slow to progress to Tuesday and Wednesday. Its surrounding upper level flow will create condtions favorable for isolated to scattered off- and-on light snow showers across the state. Overall moisture amounts will likely be low thus limit the potential snowfall from snow showers to under an inch. Only in areas that see multiple snow showers should have impactful snow accumulations. The persist low will serve to keep cold air across the silver state with highs in the 20s to 30s and lows in the tens to single digits. Thursday and beyond is looking increasingly favorable for the low pressure to deepen across the West and then push off to the east. The big disagreement is how fast the ejection to the east the low pressure will be. This matters mostly in the duration that moisture will continue to linger across the silver state. A slow ejection will see a longer duration for snow showers to take place and thus higher snow accumulation potential. Right now the forecast favors the opposite with a faster ejection and lower snow accumulation potential. Regardless the end of the week will likely remain active with snow occurring across the silver state. A silver lining will be an increase in temperatures that will more likely than not occur once this system begins to depart the West. This should see the highs go above freezing for all the valleys with highs in the 30s to 40s. AVIATION...Active winter weather will be present at all TAF sites and across northern and central NV for the next few days. This will see low level clouds and snow showers that can lower conditions to MVFR to IFR levels. The snow showers will cause mountain obscurations. Strong gusty winds will accompany the winter weather causing turbulent conditions across the silver state. In addition the winds can cause blowing dust in NW NV leading to further visibility reductions than just what the snow showers and low clouds cause. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories... Heavy snow and drifting snow closed all lanes of US-50 from NV-376 to NV-305, about a 13 mile stretch.
