.SYNOPSIS...Snow shower activity continues across the region
through the weekend, along with well below normal temperatures.
Snowfall and refreezing of melted snow can cause icy road
conditions. Temperatures trend warmer early next week, with gusty
winds on Tuesday which will aid in the melting of snow. Flooding
continues across portions of central NV due to recent snowmelt.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday. Broad trough energy over the
region continues to keep temperatures well below normal. Highs
today and Saturday will range from upper 20s to low 40s, which
will be 20-25 degrees below normal for most areas. Low
temperatures early this morning will be in the teens to mid 20s.
Lows tonight into Saturday morning will be even colder due to
fewer clouds, with some valley locations dropping into the single
digits. Snow showers continue over much of northern and portions
of central Nevada today, with up to 2 inches of new snow possible.
Snowfall during the late night and early morning hours may result
in minor accumulations on roadways, especially summits. Daytime
snow is not expected to accumulate on roadways. Snow showers will
linger over northern NV tonight into Saturday, with most of
central NV drying out.
.LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. A longwave
trough across the northwest United States will remain through much
of the long term period. This trough be the conduit by which
a few pieces of energy move through the west. The first will be a
rather weak impulse for Saturday night into Sunday. This will
bring very light snow showers or flurries with little or no
accumulation expected. What it will bring is a reinforcing shot of
cold air into the area. The cold afternoon temperatures will
continue, making it feel like December versus the first days of
Spring. Readings will be in the 20s and 30s. A weak short wave
ridge will move in during the overnight into Monday. Overnight
lows will be quite cold with temperatures in the single digits and
teens. Winds will be breezy on Monday with south to southeast
winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Some light snow showers
may be possible along the northern sections of Nevada but amounts
will be light. Highs Monday will be in the 30s and 40s. Look for
increasing clouds Monday night into Tuesday as an anonymously
deep low pressure system begins to take shape off the coast of the
Pacific Northwest states. It will stay off the coast Monday night
though some snow showers are possible north of and including I-80
early Tuesday morning. Overnight lows will be in the teens and
20s.
On Tuesday, the aforementioned deep low pressure system will be
along the West Coast with increasing winds during the day. South
to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph are
expected. As of now, advisory thresholds are not expected to be
met, but this will need to be watched, especially for central
Nevada. Also of concern is the snowpack in central Nevada,
including those areas like the Yomba Shoshone/Reese River valley
in northwest Nye, southern Eureka county, and also northeast Nye
and western White Pine county. Will need to keep watching those
areas for possible snow melt as the ground is saturated and/or
frozen, depending on elevation. Highs on Tuesday will be in the
40s to low 50s. The low pressure system will continue on a
trajectory closer to northern and central Nevada. This will help
to lower snow levels to the valley floors, with some accumulations
expected Tuesday night into Wednesday. Overnight lows will be in
the 20s with highs on Wednesday in the 30s and 40s. This has the
potential to be another winter storm for the area and this will
need to be watched.
Look for cool conditions to continue Thursday with highs in the
30s and 40s.
&&
.AVIATION...Scattered convective snow showers will be likely each
afternoon for all terminals due to the influence of broad scale
upper toughing over the NW US. The showers will combine with low
CIGS/VSBY to drop conditions to MVFR to IFR levels. LIFR levels
will also be possible as stronger showers may contain TSSN should
they affect area terminals. VFR conditions will return if only
briefly for the overnight and into the morning hours.
KELY is AMD NOT SKED due to VSBY sensor issue.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...A Flood Warning remains in effect for the area
encompassing Eureka, Kobeh Valley, and Paradise Valley due to the
playas filling with water and ongoing flood activity. Light snow
showers will continue to add to the already above average snowpack
especially at higher elevations. Snow will melt when it meets the
flood waters adding to them if just a little. Even with
temperatures staying below normal, our region is heading deeper
into the spring warm up. This will eventually melt the water heavy
snowpack causing more flooding concerns. Ponding, muddy
conditions, and washed out roads continue to be of concern as
Nevada continues through spring.
