Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 206 AM PST Sun Jan 22 2023 .SYNOPSIS...A quick round of winter weather looks to push through today bringing snow showers and gusty conditions. Drier weather will be quick to fill back in behind this system Monday with trends looking for these conditions to stay well into the mid- week. Meanwhile, colder temperature will look to accompany this break in activity leaving our overnight hours in the single digits to negatives. && .SHORT TERM...This morning through Monday night. Latest radar and satellite imagery continues to see the progression of snow showers in association with the trough brushing the eastern portion of the region. As it stands most valley locations will only receive a dusting with the continue progression expected today. However, latest trends have seen more significant accumulation in the higher elevations. Especially in areas of Northern Elko County, where it is possible to see over 7 inches on some of the mountain peaks. Beyond the snow, models are seeing a secondary impact possible in gusty wind conditions for today through early Monday morning. Currently, trends continue to place a strong upper-level jet streak directly over the eastern half of the region that will slowly work its way south through today and Monday. This jet streak will likely bleed down resulting in breezy to gusty northerly winds that could easily priests through into the overnight hours. With these winds, potential for blowing/drifting snow will become more likely around the region, which could result in visibility drops while traveling on roadways. Latest guidance is placing strongest winds across Northern Nye county as well as Southern White Pine county, where gusts could reach near the 50 mph range. With this in mind, Wind Advisories have been issue for both counties starting at 10 am this morning and lasting until 10 am Monday morning. Otherwise, dry and cold conditions are expected to return late tonight with Monday evening expected to be a full return of calm and dry weather. As for temperatures, still look for some very chill days to be ahead of us with afternoon highs for today and Monday expected to sit in the 20s to low 30s. Meanwhile, overnight lows continue to remind us it still winter with temperature in the single digits to the negatives. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Saturday. Nevada will be sandwiched in between highly amplified ridging in the Eastern Pacific and a longwave trof over much of the U.S. just to our east. This will keep us in an upper northerly flow through at least Thursday, filtering arctic air down into the state. There is a slight chance for a few mainly mountain snow showers or valley flurries on Wednesday as a trof moves through the backside of the longwave trof, but overall it looks to be dry and very cold through much of the long term period with below normal temperatures. Highs through Thursday will generally be in the 20's, except for the 30's in parts of Humboldt and northern Nye counties. Very cold lows are expected on Tuesday morning, with single digit below zero readings in many valleys and in the teens below zero for the very coldest spots. Otherwise, lows will mainly be in the single digits, with some below zero readings in the coldest valleys on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, as some lower to middle teens start to creep into Humboldt and northern Nye counties. There will be some breezes at times, but no strong wind events are expected. There could be some snow showers on Friday and/or Saturday if a trof is able to dig into Nevada on the backside of the longwave trof, but confidence remains low at this point and just some isolated showers are maintained in the forecast for now. Highs will be in the upper 20's to upper 30's. Lows will be in the single digits through the teens. && .AVIATION...Snow showers and low clouds are expected near 10Z through 19Z at KWMC, KBAM, KEKO and KELY resulting in VFR to MVFR conditions. VFR conditions are expected through 06Z Monday at KTPH with wind gusts ranging from 26 to 34 knots beginning at 15Z Sunday and continuing through 0300Z Monday.
