An arctic air mass with temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees below zero spread across southeast Minnesota at the end of January. These temperatures combined with wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph to produce dangerously cold wind chills nearing 40 degrees below zero during the morning of January 31st. The coldest wind chills reported were -39 during the early morning hours from mesonet stations near Byron (Dodge County) and Canton (Fillmore County).
