Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 301 AM MDT Thu Aug 10 2023 .SHORT TERM...Today and Friday. Early morning satellite shows last remaining clouds exiting to the east into Wyoming. Mostly clear skies are forecast throughout the day, with just few mid- to upper-level clouds across the central mountains and Montana Divide region. Temperatures will remain fairly stable, running just a few degrees on either side of yesterday's highs. Today will be noticeably windier areawide, with westerly sustained winds exceeding 20 mph and gusts to around 35 mph. Localized and brief stronger gusts will be possible, especially in the mountains. Although, the HREF ensemble maximum hourly wind speeds shows winds only exceeding 30 mph for a brief period in very isolated areas across the Arco Desert/Mud Lake region and along the ridge tops of the central mountains. Even still, this is the ensemble's high end scenario. A LAKE WIND ADVISORY is in effect for the American Falls Reservoir today due to elevated winds creating hazardous boating conditions for small craft. A closed low will form over California today and with a ridge just east over the four corners region, we could begin to see minimal monsoonal moisture working northward as early as Friday afternoon. At this time, activity looks to be limited to slight chances for just a few isolated showers across extreme southern Idaho. Cropp .LONG TERM...Saturday through Thursday. Models show a weak front sneaking through the region from the northwest on Saturday. Meanwhile, a low pressure system over southern California will be attempting to push monsoonal moisture northward through the Great Basin. Models are falling more into alignment on handling this moisture. It looks like the front will stall across Utah and will keep most of the moisture south of the region through the weekend. Although an isolated storm or two will remain possible depending upon exactly where the front stalls and how stationary it becomes. Best chances for storms is south, closer to the Utah border. On Monday the front will surge northward allowing for isolated storms; however, we will lose the better monsoonal push for next week as the low begins to retrograde into the eastern Pacific. Models are hinting more at a rex block developing along the West Coast for next week. Our region would be more influenced by the Pacific Northwest high. This will keep the region mainly dry for most of next week. Temperatures continue to look seasonable with the above normal temperatures west of our region, closer to the high pressure center. 13 && .AVIATION...Main aviation concern today is winds. BYI, IDA, PIH and DIJ will have gusts to at least 25 kts this afternoon. At SUN, we expect winds to turn upvalley this afternoon with occasional gusts to 20 kts. Expect vfr conditions at all TAF sites throughout the day. 13 && .FIRE WEATHER...Today will be noticeably windier areawide, with sustained winds exceeding 20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. Localized and brief stronger gusts are possible, especially along ridgelines in Zones 475 and 476. Conditions will trend warmer and drier, but relative humidities will widely remain over 20%, with only pockets of Zone 410 dropping to around 15%. Therefore, the limiting factors for critical fire conditions are fuels and non-critical to marginal humidities. Winds will be breezy Friday but should remain 25 mph or less.
