A swath of 4 or more inches of rain stretched from LaGrange, to Forsyth, to Augusta, with isolated amounts above 10 inches.

(Today through Monday) Issued at 346 AM EDT Sun Mar 26 2023 A favorable environment for active weather remains in place across the entire south east. The OOZ sounding indicates steep low level lapse rates and SB CAPE at 1200K/KG. Dewpoints have remain in the mid to upper 60s south of a cold front that has all but stalled across northern Georgia. The only thing the environment needs is a push to get things going. Which it may get with a short wave that pushes through this morning. A few storms in Alabama have already begin to pop along the front and have found themselves in environment favorable for developing a significant hail core and damaging winds. We're expecting this trend to continue and these storms will likely begin to impact our CWA after 5 AM. Timing and location have still been challenging to nail down. A Td boundary has set up across northern GA slicing the metro in two along an SW to NE axis. Given the latest guidance, confidence is beginning to grow that the severe threat will remain largely south and east of a line from LaGrange to Athens. The primary threat with these storms will be damaging winds and large hail but an isolated tornado can't be ruled out; especially closer to the GA/AL border where SRH will approach 200 m2/s-2. This afternoon, the threat for severe weather will begin to diminish, but heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue along the front leading to the next potential hazard which will be flash flooding. WPC indicates a slight risk for excessive rainfall supported by a bullseye of QPF along and south of the cold front in excess of 3" Sunday and into Monday. A flood watch may be warranted later this morning. Vaughn && .LONG TERM... (Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 346 AM EDT Sun Mar 26 2023 A short-lived reprieve from a very active Short Term period will begin Monday night as a weak frontal boundary stalls across Central Georgia once again. With a reinforcing push from a drier, continental airmass on its way, one final wave of precipitation is expected Tuesday morning and afternoon. A weak upper-level impulse will be moving embedded within quasi-zonal flow aloft with just enough moisture and lift to squeezed out a round of numerous, light showers and isolated thunderstorms primarily across Central Georgia ahead of a stronger cold front forecast on Tuesday Night. By Wednesday, a surface high pressure will finally dominate the weather pattern across the state as surface dewpoints drop into the mid 30s in North Georgia and mid 40s in Central Georgia. This break in the active weather is expected to last roughly through Friday, with some mid-level ridging setting up on Thursday morning through Friday morning before upper-level southwesterly flow sets in. With the surface high pressure in place, temperatures are expected to gradually climb each day with highs in the upper 60s forecast on Wednesday climb to near 80 on Friday. Additionally, PWATs will also gradually increase as mid- and upper-level moisture advect in to the area over the surface high with values jumping from 0.25-0.50 inches on Wednesday morning to around 1.25 inches on Friday afternoon, priming the area for the next round of active showers and storms. On Saturday, an upper-level shortwave with an accompanied low pressure system across the MidWest will pull up Gulf moisture into the region before a cold front enters the Southeastern CONUS. Model consensus is pretty high currently, but seeing how this is well in the extended forecast, changes may occur in the coming days. However, at this moment rain showers and thunderstorms are once again expected, though there's hope that at least this system could be one that exits quickly and doesn't linger for several days. Multiple trees reported down on Lockett Rd.
The long track tornado first touched down just inside the Alabama-Georgia state line just west of the Chattahoochee River along State Line road where several trees were snapped and noted as EF0 damage. In the course of the next 1.25 miles, the tornado|would rapidly intensify to EF3 as it moved into North West Point. West Point Road or Hwy 29, sustained the most significant damage with several homes completely leveled and many sustaining major damage. Of the 4 homes completely leveled, it was noted that the anchoring of the walls to the concrete slab was through the use of nails. As a result, the destroyed homes would have failed at lower wind speeds than EF4 thus a rating of EF3 was determined. Other homes with major damage nearby also suggested a mid range EF3 within the core of the strongest winds. The area of most|significant damage was located between West Point Road, 1st Ave and Samples Rd. Significant damage was also noted along Ann Murphy Rd to the west of Hwy 29. The tornado continued east across mostly wooded area until it reached Kia Pkwy and I85 where a large swath of trees were snapped and uprooted. It should be noted that the tornado passed 0.75 miles south of the Kia Manufacturing plant along Kia Pkwy. The tornado continued east along Lower Lovelace Rd crossing Johns Road and Billings road|causing up to EF2 damage to several structures and many trees. 3 homes were nearly destroyed along Shoemaker Road as the tornado passed through. The tornado crossed Adams road and Jarrell Hogg Rd causing EF1 damage to several homes and outbuildings as well as snapping and uprooting many trees. The tornado crossed Whitesville Road near the intersection of Ely Callaway Road causing EF1 and EF2 damage to several homes and snapping and uprooting many trees. The storm continued east crossing Bright Star Church road, Salem Farm Road, and Flat Shoals Church road snapping and uprooting many trees and causing mostly EF0 to EF1 damage to homes along each of those roads. The tornado continued east snapping trees along White Road before crossing I185 snapping trees along both sides of the Interstate. As it crossed Oak Grove Road, EF1 to EF2 damage was noted to both trees and most notably the Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari where several tigers had escaped as a result of the tornado. The tornado continued east crossing Hamilton Road (Hwy 27) and Old Chipley road snapping and uprooting many trees noted as mostly EF1 damage. As the tornado crossed into the Cherokee Resort club near the Troup County Line, more than 40+ cabins sustained damage with several cabins destroyed. The tornado damage in some|sections of the resort was rated as EF2. The tornado continued into Meriwether county crossing Dallas Mill road where it began to weaken rapidly. The last location of damage was located along Robert Williams Road where a couple snapped trees were found. |According to Troup County EMA, 146 total homes were affected, 23 were destroyed, 26 sustained major damage and 41 sustained minor damage.

The tornado spun up in an area west of North Glynn St and West Charlton St, snapping and uprooting trees. The tornado quickly intensified to EF1 as it hit the Oconee Regional Medical Center. Several windows were blown out, much of the roof of the covered walkway on the west entrance was collapsed, and the roof of the atrium and the main building sustained some damage. The tornado continued east, snapping trees across a railroad track and damaging a roof of several industrial buildings to the south of MLK Jr Drive. Several homes were damaged along Walton St by fallen trees. A large advertisement sign was blown down along Columbus St as the tornado continued ENE paralleling MLK JR Drive and W. Mitchell St. Several homes along W. Mitchell, Fraleys|Alley, and N. Wilkinson St sustained EF0 and EF1 roof damage, and several homes had fallen trees on them. A small retail complex along N. Wilkinson St sustained damage to its facade and had windows blown out. The tornado crossed MLK Jr Dr at the intersection of N. Jefferson st where it hit Northside Baptist Church. One of the building's back wall was partially blown out, an HVAC unit was blown off into the parking lot, and the main building sustained roof and siding damage. The storm continued ENE, crossing Orchard Hill Road and striking the Baldwin Co EOC where part of a roof structure was blown off and several trees were downed. As it continued it moved across an industrial area with several large warehouses. Several of the warehouses had roof material blown off, and several walls were blown out, including a|large brick wall. A large trailer was picked up from the parking lot and thrown into one of the warehouses, and several 18 wheeler trailers were blown over. The tornado continued ENE, crossing the River and snapping and uprooting trees along Summit Road and Lake Laurel Road. As the tornado crossed Black Springs Road, a home sustained moderate roof damage as the carport was pulled away from the home. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted in and around that area. The tornado quickly weakened as it crossed through a wooded area crossing Champions creek. The tornado lifted shortly|after crossing Sparta Hwy where a couple trees were uprooted.

The tornado first touched down along Ogletree Road where several trees were snapped and uprooted. The tornado continued east along and just north of Ogletree Road where trees were both snapped and uprooted both along the road and in the forested area to the north of the road. The tornado increased in intensity to EF1 as it crossed Old Durand Rd snapping and uprooting hundreds of trees. A large home suffered minor roof damage as the tornado crossed Bobwhite Road. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted near the intersection of Ogletree Road and Bobwhite road. The tornado continued east crossing Hwy 18 at the intersection of Ogletree. Several homes were severely damaged from fallen trees including a mobile home that was nearly destroyed by a tree. The tornado weakened as it crossed Hwy 27 and Harmony Church road causing mostly EF0 tree damage as it passed. The tornado passed Temple Dukes road snapping and uprooting trees causing minor home damage before reaching Dukes Waddell and Moreland Gill road where a large cover attached to a home was destroyed causing damage to the home. An outbuilding nearby also sustained roof damage in addition to snapping and uprooting trees. The tornado lifted as it crossed Hwy 85 where a couple trees were uprooted.

A EF0 tornado briefly touched just east of Mountain Springs Church Road in northern Twiggs County. The tornado snapped and uprooted trees behind a home along the road and blew siding off of a home next to a main power line running through the area. Several trees were snapped and uprooted on either side of the clearing for the powerlines. The tornado quickly lifted within a heavily forested area shortly after touching down.

The public relayed a report of a flooded home off Graham Road due to high water on Walnut Creek. There was approximately 50 inches of water inundating the home, causing catastrophic damage to the property. Radar estimates indicate that 3 to 4 inches of rain occurred during the day on March 27, on top of 1.5 to 2 inches that fell the day prior. The combination of high rainfall rates, runoff rates, wet antecedent conditions, and ongoing flooding on the mainstem rivers caused the floodwaters to rise to a point of inundating the home.

The Emergency Manager relayed a report of a dam breach at Lake Tchukolako following a period of heavy rainfall. In the preceding 36-hours, the area of the lake and the immediate upstream basin received 3 to 5 inches of rain, causing the dam to be overwhelmed. Although the dam failed at approximately 1 AM EST March 28, it was being monitored for 'imminent failure' through the day March 27. The failure resulted in flooding and the subsequent closure of Wrigley Road. This dam had previously failed in May 2020, and repairs were complete in summer 2022.
