.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)

Another day of active weather is in store across eastern Utah and
western Colorado today as a strong storm digs across the Great
Basin. Satellite and radar imagery are already lighting up as
expected early this morning with waves of banded precipitation
moving through from southwest to northeast. This is due to the
deep, moist, southwest flow associated with an atmospheric river
and a strong ~150 kt 250 mb jet aloft. As we head through the
morning and early afternoon hours, precipitation will become
locally enhanced as a cold front treks across the region. Driving
this front is a potent, negatively tilted shortwave / vort max
that are progged to push through during peak heating... with non-
zero instability. In the mountains, the result will be moderate to
heavy snow with significant accumulations, particularly for south
and southwest facing slopes. Given the robust forcing combined
with the very fast flow aloft... strong, gusty winds will also be
a real concern in mountainous terrain in addition to the snow. In
fact, wind gusts of 55 to 75 mph are a good bet, especially above
tree line. Outside of the mountains, snow transitions to mainly
rain for the lower desert valleys with snow levels initially
holding between 6 and 8K feet. In the wake of the front, snow
levels will gradually drop to most valley floors as cold air
advection sets up. This may allow places that are mainly rain to
end as a little snow late, but with little to no accumulation.
Otherwise, the cold / dry air advection will bring an end to most
of the shower activity across southeast Utah and portions of
western Colorado this afternoon and evening with some clearing
too. This will help to drive boundary layer mixing, allowing for
gusty post-frontal breezes in the lower valleys as well.
The strong jet aloft shifts eastward later this evening and
overnight, with waning forcing following in its wake. This should
bring an end to most of the rest of the showers, though some will
continue to linger along the Continental Divide mountains through
Thursday morning. All winter highlights are scheduled to expire at
midnight tonight and saw no reason to change that timing with
this package. Overall, the going forecast remains on track and
will make any necessary tweaks in concert with real time
observations.
On Thursday, a trailing wave embedded in westerly flow in
conjunction with cold air aloft will produce another round of
fairly widespread showers, especially across the higher terrain.
Showers will redevelop late in morning and be most prevalent
during the afternoon. Most of this activity should remain on the
lighter side, but steep lapse rates and around 250 j/kg of SBCAPE
will certainly be enough to produce some locally heavier showers.
Snow accumulations are also expected to follow a similar line of
thinking. Most will be under an inch, but some places in the
mountains where showers are heavier could see on the order of 2 to
5 inches of fresh snow. Given the time of year, impacts to
roadways will be minimal and additional highlights are unlikely.
Temperatures through the short term period will remain well below
normal for late March... and that will continue right through the
long term period as well. More on that below.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday)

It appears as though spring is cancelled until further notice.
Until the blocky pattern consisting of an amplified E.Pacific
ridge and strong Bermuda High over the Caribbean to SE CONUS
breaks down...the weakness will be in the West. This means storms
will continue to roll through and temperatures remain well below
normal...and if you don't believe me...ask CPC. For the remainder
of the week into the weekend, though unsettled, we will be not be
tapped into a AR. Instead we will have more of a direct link to
the Arctic and it will feel like it. On Friday a cold front will
be forced out of the Great Basin into our CWA by energy diving out
of the PacNW and across Wyoming. Another shot of very cold air
and snow will impact our CWA but mainly the mountains as
again...we are not dealing with a significant moisture tap. The
forecast trend has changed little with 2-5/3-6 inches of snow over
our mountains Friday into early Saturday. The cold front will
settle near our southern border and another digging trough across
the PacNW will force energy across the 4 Corners region Saturday
through early next week. Several days of light snow look to add up
to 3-6/4-8 inches across the higher mountains...favoring the
central and southern Colorado ranges. The sad story will be high
temperatures some 20 to 30 degrees below normal for the weekend.
The temperature in Grand Junction may end up the same or colder
than International Falls MN. We will begin a slow warm to start
the week as yet another strong cyclone digs down the Pacific Coast
toward central Cali. An even sadder story is that this warmup
will only be to 10 to 15 degrees below normal. A brief break in
the precipitation is anticipated for Monday into Tuesday as
Southwest flow increases aloft. The western cyclone looks to be
tapping into the Pacific moisture train and this should help add
to the snowpack later in the week.

Active weather is ongoing across the area at this hour. Heavy rain
and snow showers are periodically dropping conditions to IFR/LIFR
at many terminals. This activity will continue over the next 3 to
6 hours, and will begin to diminish this evening. Likewise, gusty
westerly winds will spread across the region this afternoon but
will diminish during the overnight hours. After midnight local
time, expect most terminals to come up to VFR conditions and for
winds to become light and somewhat terrain driven. Mountain snow
showers will occur once again tomorrow, leaving high elevation
terminals with the potential to see drops to MVFR during the day
and for issues with mountain obscuration throughout the period.
