.SYNOPSIS...Skies will slowly clear out today although some light
morning snow showers will be possible in the Tehachapi Mountains.
Some mountain showers will be possible on the Sierra Nevada on
Saturday otherwise the weekend looks to be dry with cool
temperatures. The next system will impact our area Monday night
through Wednesday.

.DISCUSSION...The upper trough that brought the rain and mountain
snow to our area earlier this week is continuing to shift east
into the central CONUS while shortwave energy continues to push
through central CA from the northwest. This shortwave energy will
maintain some upslope over the Tehachapi Mountains resulting in
scattered snow showers which have the potential to impact travel
along Interstate 5 and Highway 58. A Winter Weather Advisory
remains in effect for the Tehachapi, Grapevine and Frazier
Mountain communities until 1100 AM PDT this morning. In addition,
downslope winds above 50 mph will continue to impact the Mojave
Desert Slopes this morning where a Wind Advisory remains in
effect until 500 AM this morning. While winds in the Mojave are
progged to decrease later this morning, the HRRR has been
trending towards increased winds again for this area this
afternoon and evening so will need to take a look at this
situation.

In the meantime a shortwave ridge is progged to strengthen just
off the coast this weekend which will maintain mainly dry weather
for our area although an upper level dropping into the Great
Basin on Saturday might bring a few snow showers to the higher
elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Temperatures across the area
will remain below seasonal normals as a cool airmass prevails
over the region.

The medium range models and their ensemble means are converging
on the idea of another large upper tough dropping southward off
the PAC NW coast on Monday then further southward into CA on
Tuesday and Wednesday. This will bring another round of
significant precipitation to our area Monday night through
Wednesday with the heaviest precipitation expected on Tuesday
afternoon and evening. Snow levels are progged to be between 4000
and 5000 feet on Tuesday and lower to 2500 to 3500 feet by
Wednesday morning which will result in potential travel impacts
in the Sierra foothills and across the Tehachapi Mountains
including along Interstate 5 and Highway 58 once again. Latest NBM
probabilistic guidance continues to indicate a 60-70 percent
chance of a foot or more of snow across many of the mountain
communities in the Sierra Nevada Tuesday and Tuesday night with
additional snowfall likely on Wednesday. The trough will move east
of our area on Thursday, but cyclonic flow will maintain
unsettled conditions and a chance of showers for our area.

&&

.AVIATION...Areas of mountain obscuring IFR in the Sierra Nevada
in upslope clouds and in the Tehachapi Mountains in upslope clouds
and showers until 20Z Fri. Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail
for the next 24 hours.

&&

.AIR QUALITY ISSUES...None.
