Severe/D2 drought remained unchanged through the first half of April. According to the April 21st release of the U.S. Drought Monitor, there was some improvement over Corson County but worsening across the bootheel of Lyman County. Extreme/D3 drought conditions were the first time D3 was in the Aberdeen forecast area since September 28th, 2021. While beneficial rains occurred, rainfall missed central South Dakota, and precipitation deficits remained high, or 3 to 5 inches over the past six months. The Bad River near Fort Pierre had 7-day average streamflow at the 5th percentile, or much below average. The lack of rainfall continued to cause stock ponds to remain dry or have low water with bad quality across central South Dakota. On the April 26th release of the U.S. Drought Monitor, Corson County was removed from Severe D2 Drought due to heavy wet snowfall on the 14-16 and additional significant precipitation on the 23-24th.
