Rainfall was slightly below normal across much of the area in April. This did not improve the long term precipitation deficit from the previous several months. As a result, nearly all of the central California Interior remained in an extreme drought at the end of April, 2022. As of April, 2022, most of the impacted area has received less than 40% of normal precipitation since July 1, 2020.

.SYNOPSIS...
A warming trend is expected today and Saturday. By Saturday
afternoon, high temperatures will be around ten degrees above
normal for this time of the year. Gusty winds are possible in a
portion of the Kern County mountains and desert both Sunday and
Monday. Temperatures will trend upward next week. Near record
heat is likely in the San Joaquin Valley Thursday and Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
A ridge of high pressure will move eastward through the Western
United States today and tonight. A trough of low pressure will
progress eastward across the Pacific Northwest Saturday. A warming
trend is anticipated today and Saturday. Maximum temperatures
this afternoon will be around ten degrees warmer than yesterday
afternoon. High temperatures Saturday afternoon will be two to
four degrees warmer than this afternoon. Maximum temperatures
Saturday afternoon will be around degrees above their typical
values for the beginning of April. A trough of low pressure will
deepen as it moves across California Sunday and into the Great
Basin Sunday night. Zonal flow aloft is expected Monday. A
downward temperature trend is anticipated Sunday and Monday. Be
that as it may, temperatures will remain above seasonal values.
Strong, gusty winds are possible in a portion of the Kern County
mountains and desert both Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, and
again Monday afternoon and Monday night.
A ridge of high pressure will move eastward over the Eastern
Pacific Ocean Tuesday and Tuesday night. This ridge of high
pressure will park itself over California Wednesday through
Thursday night, before progressing eastward Friday. A warming
trend is expected Tuesday and Wednesday. High temperatures Tuesday
afternoon will be a couple of degrees warmer than Monday
afternoon. Maximum temperatures Wednesday afternoon will be around
five degrees warmer than Tuesday afternoon. High temperatures
Wednesday afternoon will be twelve to fourteen degrees above
normal for this time of year. Maximum temperatures in the San
Joaquin Valley Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon will be in
the lower 90s, which is around twenty degrees above their typical
values for the first half of April. Record heat is likely in
Merced (82% probability), Madera (80% probability), Hanford (73%
probability), and Fresno (62% probability) Thursday afternoon.
Record heat is possible in Bakersfield (31% probability) Thursday
afternoon. Record heat is likely in Merced (70% probability),
