.UPDATE...
No significant change to previous forecast or reasoning. Moisture is
decreasing slightly, but lingering moisture will continue to support
typical shower activity. Fewer passing showers are expected tonight
than last night. Still expecting an active weekend, as the tropical
wave continues its approach.
&&
.AVIATION...
Generally VFR conditions are expected to continue across all
terminals. VCSH overnight at TIST/TISX are expected to have limited
operational impacts at those aerodromes. Tomorrow's afternoon
convection will again be in western and interior Puerto Rico;
limited impacts are expected at aerodromes, but VCSH expected for
TJBQ, with most showers likely to remain south of the aerodrome.
Winds east at around 8 to 12 knots overnight, picking up after
sunrise, to 15 to 20 knots tomorrow, with stronger gusts.
&&
.MARINE...
No changes made to previous forecast or reasoning. Modest
improvement in conditions continues tomorrow, but rapid
deterioration of conditions is expected late tomorrow. Small Craft
Advisories remain in place.
There is a high risk of rip currents for most local beaches.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 623 PM AST Thu Jun 30 2022/
SYNOPSIS...
Moisture from Potential Tropical Cyclone Two resulted in showers
mainly over Western Puerto Rico during the afternoon hours.
Some rain activity should continue tonight and overnight mainly
over the eastern area. An increase in precipitable water values
continues to be forecast on Saturday due to the passing of a
tropical wave. This tropical wave has a low chance to further
develop but should bring enhanced shower and thunderstorm
activity. Small craft advisories are currently in effect for
offshore waters besides the Atlantic waters. High rip current risk
is currently in effect for most beaches in Puerto Rico, and the
beaches of Vieques, Culebra and St. Croix .
SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday...
Main shower and thunderstorm activity for the forecast area this
afternoon was in western Puerto Rico, mainly in the Mayaguez
municipality. Streamers also formed out of St. Croix, St. Thomas and
Culebra. The streamers out of St. Croix have stayed over the
Caribbean Sea while the one out of St. Thomas and Culebra is
reaching eastern and eastern-interior municipalities. All of this
activity currently continues but has diminished in coverage and
intensity. Precipitable water values are currently within
normal values for this time of the year, at around 1.6 inches,
with moisture from Potential Tropical Cyclone Two which is
currently in the eastern Caribbean. This moisture can work to
support the typical shower activity for the forecast area during
the overnight and afternoon hours. On Friday, as an upper-level
level low nears the forecast area, rain chances and thunderstorm
activity on Friday could be enhanced, including the afternoon
seasonal pattern over western Puerto Rico but windy conditions can
work to diminish total rainfall accumulations that day. The high
pressure system at the surface just west of the Azores will be
found north of the Azores Islands by the end of the forecast
period, on Saturday night. Precipitable water values should rise
significantly to above normal values, around 2.3 inches due to
moisture from a vigorous tropical wave moving over the area on
Saturday. Even with this tropical wave having a low chance (10%)
to develop into a tropical cyclone it will continue to affect the
region for the rest of the short term period. Increased shower and
thunderstorm activity to end the short term period can lead to
urban and small stream flooding in many sectors of the island with
the largest accumulations possibly eastern and southeastern
Puerto Rico. The tropical wave should also bring surface winds of
15 to 25 mph with higher gusts.
LONG TERM...Sunday through Wednesday...
FROM PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 544 AM AST Thu Jun 30 2022/
Moisture associated to a tropical wave is expected to linger across
the area during the first half of the period. A this time this
tropical wave has a 10% chance of development during the next five
days. However, it will reach the local islands as a strong and
vigorous wave. The latest GFS-20 model guidance shows a trend
moisture content causing heavy rainfall across the islands. The
eastern portions of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are
expected to receive most of the rainfall activity, increasing the
potential of thunderstorms and flooding. Unstable conditions
aloft will persist at least until late Monday. Associated impacts
with this system could lead to strong winds with gusts,
thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hazardous marine and coastal
conditions, and urban and small streams flooding. On Monday, the
moisture content will continue high across the local area,
increasing the potential for another round of showers and
unstable conditions. Tuesday onwards, weather conditions will
star to improve as the tropical wave moves out of the region. A
mass of dry air will filter into the area and a ridge will place
near the region. A seasonal weather pattern will return with
passing showers during the morning hours across the windward
portions of the islands, followed by the afternoon convection in
the west. Winds will return form the east-southeast. Expect an
increase in temperatures and more Saharan Dust.
AVIATION...Easterly winds will continue between 15 and 20 knots
with gusts between 25 and 30 knots thru this evening (30/23z). This
winds will bring clouds and showers over TAFs, producing brief MVFR
conditions. Afternoon SHRA and TSRA will develop over the interior
and western PR and could impact JBQ/JPS thru 30/23z. Winds will
become calm to light and variable after 30/23z. A similar pattern is
expected tomorrow.
MARINE...
Surface high pressure stretched across the North Atlantic will
combine with the passage of Potential Tropical Cyclone Two well to
the south of the local area to result in a tight pressure gradient
over the region. This will sustain moderate to fresh and locally
strong winds. Building seas are expected, and seas of up to 5 to 7
feet are anticipated and should increase Friday night, especially
for local offshore waters and passages.
