Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 355 AM PDT Sat Nov 5 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Valley rain and mountain snow is expected across much of northern NV this morning, which will extend south to around the Highway 50 corridor this afternoon. The mix of rain and snow showers continue for the remainder of this weekend, with light snow down to some valley floors late tonight into Sunday morning. Snow and gusty winds become impactful Monday through Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night. Strong northwesterly jet energy currently moving through the Pacific NW will bring valley rain, mountain snow and gusty southwesterly winds of 15 to 25 mph to most of northern NV through noon. This afternoon and evening the jet will sag a little further southward, expanding the rain, snow and gusty winds into most of central NV. Snow levels lower to around 5000 feet overnight across northern NV with some light snow possible in valleys of mainly Elko County. Zonal flow aloft tonight becomes southwesterly on sunday as a deepening upper level low off the SW coast of Canada drifts south along the Pacific NW coast. Light rain and snow showers linger over mainly just Elko County on Sunday, with valley rain and mountain snow expanding across northern and central NV Sunday evening and night. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Saturday. A robust Pacific trof will continue to dig south over the west coast early in the week. Ample upper forcing with a jet maximum upstream of the trof axis will promote further amplification of this feature over the Great Basin region. Closer to the surface, a potent cold front looks to begin sweeping across Nevada from the northwest early Monday morning. Main effects will be windy pre frontal winds, valley snow, and cold temperatures post frontal. South/southwest winds ahead of the front will be quite windy with the potential for headlining wind products. Gusts in excess of 50 mph look likely across east central Nevada. Winds are to turn generally northwest post frontal and trend lighter as the upper low moves over the region. A moisture plume that has been directed into the west coast will provide ample preconditioning for substantial precipitation (south of I80)totals. Precipitation looks to begin as valley rain and mountain snow with snow levels lowering behind the front Monday. Snow showers will likely remain across the region Tuesday and Tuesday night with conditions becoming dry thru Wednesday. Preliminary snow totals for the event are indicated to be several inches for the valleys with the potential for 2+ feet over the mountains, making this a fairly significant early season winter storm. Snow totals across Humboldt County however look to be but a few inches with lesser impacts expected in general. Weather will be fairer Wednesday and Thursday with the potential for some breezy winds and blowing/drifting snow. Temperatures will become much cooler as colder air settles into the region, look for daytime highs in the upper 20s to 30s Wednesday and Thursday with overnight lows mostly in the single digits to low teens, below zero in the typical colder locations. The upper wave pattern progresses east the latter half of the week with a transient ridge moving across the western U.S. late in the week. Weather looks to remain generally fair with a modest warming trend. && .AVIATION...-SHSN are possible near the KEKO terminal during the early morning hours. The area of showers are expected to expand westward towards KWMC by late morning. As a result, MVFR conditions can be expected intermittently with any shower activity. Shower activity in the north is expected to increase with IFR/LIFR conditions possible at KWMC-KBAM-KEKO. -SHRA/-SHSN will move south and begin affecting the central terminals of KELY and KTPH later in the day. Look for breezy S-SW10-20G30KT tomorrow morning and afternoon at all terminals. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
