Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 227 AM PST Mon Jan 31 2022 .SYNOPSIS...Northern Elko County may see a light snow shower or two today, along with some gusty winds, otherwise dry and mild across the region today. Much cooler across northern and central NV tonight, and through the middle of the week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night. Jet energy clips northeastern NV today, with a few light snow showers possible over and near mountains of northern Elko County. Best chances for a dusting of snow will be before noon today, over the Jarbidge and Independence Mountains. West to NW winds will also be gusty across portions of Elko County today. Highs today will generally be in the 40s to low 50s, with the exception of northern Elko County where most valley locations will stay in the 30s. Tonight into Tuesday reinforcing trough energy digs south through the inter-mountain west, with a cold continental air mass dropping through northern and into central NV. Lows will be in the single digits to low teens in most locations tonight. Highs on Tuesday will be mainly 30s, with some valleys in Elko County only warming into the 20s. Not expecting any showers tonight through Tuesday afternoon, however Tuesday evening and night more light snow flurries are expected over mainly just mountains of Elko and possibly White Pine County. Tuesday night wind gusts will increase across mountains and along SE slopes of higher terrain as the northerly jet moves in over much of the CWA. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday. An pronounced and elongated upper level trough will be exiting the region Wednesday with a few lingering mountain snow showers across far northern Elko county and Great Basin NP. Another short wave within predominantly north-northwest flow aloft will makes its way through the region Saturday and possibly another weak upper disturbance by late Monday. However, trajectory of these disturbances is not conducive to significant precipitation as moisture will be limited as a dry continental air mass will be in place. Winds will increase from the north-northwest with each upper-level trough but not a significant amount. Northeast Nevada has the best chances for a few snow showers with these systems but they continue to be low at best. Temperatures will quite cold to by midweek with highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s with 40s expected by the weekend. Thursday morning could be quite cold with single digit lows with isolated valleys dropping below zero. Low temperatures will gradually rise to a more manageable 10 to 20 degrees by the weekend. && .AVIATION...Look for VFR conditions.
