Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 215 PM PST Sat Dec 10 2022 .SYNOPSIS...A winter system will move widespread snow across the state late tonight through Sunday. This will create hazardous road conditions, with slick and snow covered roads expected in northern and central Nevada. Winds with blowing snow will create additional visibility hazards in central Nevada and in mountain areas. Lighter snow showers are expected Sunday night through Monday. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night Well advertised Winter Storm still on track to bring widespread snow to the region tonight through Sunday. Precipitation is currently banking up against the Sierra as southerly flow streams into Nevada. This is creating good warming, with warmest valleys currently in the 40's to lower 50's. South winds are strongest in the mountains and in central Nevada and will be increasing some overnight, especially in White Pine County, where some gusts of 50 to 60 mph is expected. Showers will start to increase this evening in Humboldt County, where snow levels will be 5000 to 6000 feet, with rain in lower valleys eventually changing over to a mix as the evening wears on before dropping to the valleys floors by around midnight. Snow showers will be spreading eastward after midnight, moving across the state through the morning hours and then continuing into the early afternoon. Widespread snow accumulations are expected along with hazardous road conditions, with slick and snow covered roads expected in northern and central Nevada. Winds with blowing snow will create additional visibility hazards in central Nevada and in mountain areas. Winter Storm Warnings in central Nevada and Winter Weather Advisories in northern Nevada remain in effect to account for these expected impacts. Highs will mainly be in the 30's. The heavier bands of snow will be moving east of the state by evening, though wrap around showers will provide some additional light accumulations Sunday night where showers occur. Lows will be in the single digits through the teens with lighter winds. .LONG TERM...Monday to next Saturday Lingering snow showers from this weekend's snow event will continue Monday with accumulations in the higher elevation areas and passes of northern Elko county and northeast Humboldt county ranging from from 2 to 5 inches; higher on mountaintops. Valley locations could pickup an additional inch of accumulation. The snow ends late Monday evening. The best chance for steady snow in valley locations north of HWY 50 is late Monday morning through late Monday afternoon. This is also when the winds will be strongest too leading to some blowing and drifting of snow across roadways. Temperatures on Monday will struggle to reach the freezing mark across northern and central Nevada valley locations with cooler temperatures in the mountains. Dry conditions and northwest winds will continue Tuesday through to Thursday in northern and central Nevada. It will remain seasonally cool through this time period with highs in the teens/twenties across areas north of HWY 50 and the mid-30s south of there. There is a 75% chance low temperatures along and north of I-80, under clear skies and calm winds aiding with radiational cooling as a result of the recent snowfall, ranging from the single digits below to slightly above zero. These values have a 40% chance of exceeding low temperatures from a month ago in many places. Models are trending at another area of low pressure crossing Nevada next weekend bringing reinforcing colder air and another chance of snow. The Canadian model is the outlier with a very strong push of Pacific moisture into central Nevada next Friday night/Saturday morning while other models are less quick and much drier. Therefore, confidence is low at this time for another weekend storm. Temperatures next weekend remain in the 20s for highs with single digits lows. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected this afternoon before MVFR this evening and overnight in KWMC, KBAM and KEKO. Wind gusts at KWMC, KTPH, KBAM and KEKO will range from 17 to 21 knots this afternoon into the overnight hours. KELY wind gusts ranging from 30 to 40 knots.
