The stage is set for this next accumulating snow storm late tonight through Monday for most of our region. After a sudden warm-up due to a western chinook warm front, surface winds will begin turning more from the northwest and north later this evening. Then, overnight winds will set up from the north as east-west oriented band of rain move south from southern Saskatchewan into northern Montana. Rain will be the initial precip type from sunset this evening until around midnight. Then, expect a rain/snow mix from midnight until 2AM. Snow will be the main precip type after 3 AM, especially near and north of the Missouri River. The previously issue Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory for most of NE MT, with a Winter Storm Warning being the exception now in place for northern Phillips County, where we expect 6 inches of snow. Given the multiple impacts of blowing and drifting snow along with wind chills, felt it was best to lead with these headlines. Chose to section out for north of the Missouri versus south of the Missouri River. Wind Chill concerns will begin along our northern tier zones Sunday morning, but will really become widespread Sunday night and into Monday morning. Measuring any of this snow will be difficult as the forecast calls for sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts to 40 mph. Headlines will need to be modified on Monday to account for the departing snow and the remaining wind chills. The arctic high pressure behind the snow storm will bring calm winds, but dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills for most of next week. && .AVIATION... LAST UPDATED: 2205Z FLIGHT CAT: VFR today and tonight, then deteriorating to LIFR/VLIFR in blowing snow by Sunday morning. DISCUSSION: Warm front from the west along with increased mid level clouds. A cold front late tonight will bring low clouds and light rain overnight that will change to snow by Sunday morning.
