Clipper system tracking across central Canada this morning, with cold front expected to back door into Montana later today. With shortwave and 50+ kt 700mb jet crossing central Montana around midday, have issued High wind warning for areas mainly south and west of Malta, Glasgow and Jordan for today. Another area to watch will be the northeast corner of the state, where tighter pressure gradient will push winds close to warning criteria. Temperatures will be warming toward 60 degrees ahead of the cold front, and combined with the strong winds could produce elevated fire weather concerns. Timing not as favorable for significant drying with frontal passage in the afternoon bringing the potential for some rain. Bands of precipitation will continue to develop over eastern Montana tonight into Friday as high pressure drops into the northern plains. Rain will transition to snow as the temperature drops overnight, with accumulations generally below an inch. Weekend looks warm and dry thanks again to that SW ridge of high pressure. Monday night and beyond a cold air low pressure system dives over our region for low confidence scattered chances for additional snowfall. && .AVIATION... Intermittent wind speeds of at least 40 mph were common in the Little Rocky Mountains from mid morning to early afternoon. The peak wind gust of 64 mph was recorded at 9:00 AM at the BLM Zortman E mesonet site.
A peak wind gust of 58 mph occurred at 10:41 AM at the Dry Blood Creek, MT RAWS site (DBCM8).
At the Lufborough Hill MT-200 DOT site (MTLUF), intermittent wind speeds of at least 40 mph began in the late morning and lasted into the early afternoon hours. The peak wind gust of 59 mph was recorded at 11:43 AM.
A peak wind gust of 64 mph occurred at 1:15 PM at the BLM Glendive mesonet site.
