An Arctic airmass persisted across the Northern Plains from the morning of the 1st through the morning of the 2nd, having started in late December the previous calendar year (see the December 2021 Storm Data entry for additional details). Under dominant high pressure, very cold wind chills persisted during this period across west central Minnesota, with only slight improvements in conditions during the daytime on the 1st. Some of the coldest recorded wind chill readings include -40 degrees F 2 miles NNW of Big Stone Colony and -38 F 3 miles WSW of Wheaton.
