.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 212 PM EST Sat Nov 19 2022
Gusty winds and moderate to heavy lake effect snow showers will
develop behind an arctic cold front late this afternoon into
tonight, mainly north of US 6 in Indiana and Michigan where 2 to 7
inches of snow can be expected. Remaining cold otherwise with
wind chills down to near zero by early Sunday morning. Drier and
warmer weather arrives next week.

.SHORT TERM...(This Afternoon through Sunday)

An arctic cold front will swing through from nw to se late this
afternoon into early this evening with gusty winds and squally lake
enhanced snow showers. This boundary is leading an upper level
trough axis and impressive cold core (500 mb temps dipping to near
-37C and the 1.5PVU sfc to ~650 mb sliding over northern portions of
the FA this evening). Radar trends and obs favor at least scattered
snow showers along the front given good low level fgen/omega and
upward QG forcing between now and 01z.
Lake enhanced snow and blowing snow is the main show post-frontal,
mainly along and north of US 6 in IN/MI, as convective depths
increase to 10-12 kft into the DGZ. Rapid reductions in visibilities
within more intense snow bands are expected into this evening with
difficult travel conditions anticipated. Winds could also gust up to
near 40 mph within more intense snow shower activity with brief taps
into 35-40 kts at 850 mb. A transition to pure multi banded lake
effect is then expected overnight in these favored wnw flow LES
belts with extreme lake induced instability allowing squally
conditions to persist...again mainly north of US 6...though some
impacts/light accums could dip down to near the US 30 corridor. Only
minor changes were made to PoPs/QPF/snow totals, with the primary
update to upgrade Berrien-Cass-St Joe MI to a Winter Storm Warning.
A decrease in lake effect coverage/intensity will follow later
tonight, and especially into Sunday morning, as dry air advection,
large scale subsidence and backing flow trajectories eventually
takes it toll on lake induced equilibrium levels. Areas outside of
the lake plume will likely experience a brief time of near zero wind
chills otherwise early Sunday morning...with most of the FA trending
mainly sunny with highs in the mid 20s to low 30s on Sunday.

Monday through Thursday will feature a well deserved return to
milder temperatures (near normal) as return low level flow
develops under quasi-zonal/split flow aloft. A closed low looks to
develop late this week into the Eastern US, though considerable
model spread remains in track/evolution. A consensus favors
increasing rain chances Thanksgiving into Friday, possibility
transition to lake effect/enhanced snow showers on the backside
later Friday/Saturday. Will continue to run with broadbrush NBM
PoPs for now given the lingering model discrepancies.

After a lull in lake effect snow showers overnight into this
morning, renewed lake effect snow showers are expected to develop
early this forecast valid period and continue through much of the
night. Gradual veering of low level flow in advance of a strong
cold front has allowed for rapid redevelopment of snow showers
across eastern Lake Michigan shoreline, and these snow showers
should continue to expand southward through 20Z. The combination
of snow showers and gusty west winds to 30 knots will result in
periods of vsbys less than 1 miles at KSBN. Period of frontal
forcing and vorticity advection with the associated upper level
trough should also provide scattered snow showers to KFWA in the
21Z-01Z with some brief IFR vsbys possible. Strong wind gusts to
25 to 30 knots to persist this evening due to depth of mixed
layer, but gusts should subside overnight and toward daybreak.
After 12Z, expecting mainly just light snow showers or flurries
to persist at KSBN, with a quieter weather pattern shaping up for
the remainder of Sunday/Sunday night.

Near zero visibilities and intense 1 per hour snowfall rates were observed with more intense lake effect bands, especially during the overnight hours. Blowing snow and snow covered roads occurred as a result with difficult travel and accidents across the region. The heaviest snow accumulations occurred north of the US 20 corridor, with a report of 9.6 inches of total snow accumulation in South Bend. Lesser amounts and impacts were experienced across southern portions of the county.
