Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 244 PM MDT Thu May 26 2022 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday night...A shortwave trough will bring thunderstorms to the Upper Treasure Valley, the West Central Mountains, and the Magic Valley this evening through tonight. The first push of thunderstorms will move into southeast Oregon this afternoon, with additional development in the Magic Valley in the early evening. Another passage of cooler air will bring a second push of thunderstorms across the West Central and Boise Mountains overnight. Strong wind gusts of 50-60 mph in the Upper Treasure Valley and the Magic Valley with some of the stronger thunderstorms. As this upper level low passes through the region with embedded shortwave troughs, widespread precipitation and cooler temperatures with the chance of thunderstorms will continue for the region on Friday. High temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 60s on Friday and Saturday for the valleys. Precipitation totals of a quarter inch to half an inch are possible through Saturday night for the valleys with totals up to three quarters of an inch in the mountains on Saturday night. .LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday...Large upper level low over the region Sunday through Monday bringing colder and showery conditions. Look for rain showers throughout lower elevations and valleys with snow or a mixture across higher, mountainous terrains. Showers intensify into thunderstorms with gusty winds in certain areas due to enhanced dynamics on Sunday and Monday afternoons. Temperatures will cool to about 20 degrees below normal on Sunday. The low shifts eastward Monday allowing temperatures to warm a few degrees to about 15 degrees below normal. Another weak trough passage on Tuesday will bring afternoon showers and keep temperatures about 10 degrees below normal. By the end of the period, drier, more stable conditions associated with slight ridging will gradually transition into the region as the low migrates eastward. High temperatures will rebound back up (from the 50's and 60's) to the 70's and 80's starting Wednesday. && .AVIATION...VFR. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop late this afternoon and continue through the evening. KBKE along with KJER and KTWF have the best chance for thunderstorms today. Surface winds: variable 5-15 kt, becoming SE- SW 10-20 kt Thursday afternoon, becoming W-NW after 27/00Z. Gusts to 45 kt possible with thunderstorms.
