.SYNOPSIS...
Breezy and dry today. Cool and dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday
with near freezing minimum temperatures in the Valley. Widespread
precipitation returns Thursday through the weekend with high
elevation snow.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Some clouds moving through the south half of the district as a
disturbance off the Scal coast pushes towards Baja. Otherwise
clear skies. Satellite images show the cloud cover pushing through
sCal with a mid level flow out of the west. Flow turns northwest
this afternoon as a drier disturbance moves east of the Sierra
into the Great basin. The stronger northwest flow will be
orthogonal to the Tehachapi range increasing the potential for
strong gusty winds below the passes due to downslope rotor winds.
Behind the trough some drier air will move into central
California. The dry air will increase the potential for freezing
temperatures at night Monday and Tuesday. However some mid level
wind mixing should mitigate the cold temperatures tonight. More
widespread freeze potential should occur Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning with optimal radiational cooling conditions due
to light winds and clear skies. Ensemble model probability for
temperatures less than 32 degrees range from 75 to 99 percent in
the colder low lying areas of the valley Tuesday night. Freeze
potential should diminish Wednesday as flow turns more onshore
westerly bringing in a maritime airmass.

For the latter part of the week, ensemble guidance indicates two
weather systems will move south along the British Colombia coast and
onshore over California. The first system brings precipitation to
Yosemite and north sectors late Thursday morning spreading south
along a front Thursday afternoon. The heavier precipitation is
expected over the Sierra Thursday night and diminishing Friday
morning. Guidance has remained in fairly decent alignment for a
system this far in advance. With the GFS showing a strong tropical
push merging with the moisture with the trough, heavy amounts of
snow are expected through those higher elevations of the Sierras.
Second storm system may bring another round of precipitation
Saturday into Sunday. Essentially, two separate storm systems
will impact the district through this forecast period bringing
rain for lower elevations and heavy amounts of snowfall for the
Sierra range. There may be a brief break Friday into Saturday as
we sit between systems, but overall a much wetter pattern is
expected to impact the region starting Thursday.

.AVIATION... Areas of VFR with areas of MVFR visibility in haze
and mist are likely in parts of the San Joaquin Valley after
through 18z Sunday. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail for at
least the next 24 hours.
