What happened

The episode as NWS HNX wrote it up.

A slow moving upper trough moved across the region between May 8 and May 11. This system resulted in a period of unseasonably cool temperatures across the area along with a some light showers mainly over the Sierra Nevada on May 9 and 10. This system also produced a strong onshore pressure gradient which resulted in a period of breezy to windy conditions across the mountains and deserts of Kern County between the morning of May 10 and the evening of May 11. Several stations measured gusts exceeding 45 mph during this time frame. The trough finally moved east of the area by the morning of May 12 allowing for the winds to subside.

.SYNOPSIS...
Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible in the
Sierra Nevada Wednesday afternoon, otherwise dry conditions can
be expected into early next week. A warming trend is expected
Wednesday through Friday. A taste of summer is anticipated this
weekend, with temperatures warming to around ten degrees above
normal.

.DISCUSSION...
The low pressure trough over the western United States continues
to provide us with unseasonably cool weather, with temepratures
on track to top out around 15 degrees below normal again this
afternoon. Some associated shower activity is also occuring over
the Sierra and in western portions of Fresno and Merced counties.
Moderate northwesterly wind gusts are also beginning to increase
as a result of the developing trough.

High resolution model solutions diminish shower activity along
the west side of the Valley by late afternoon, while Sierra
showers dementia later this evening. Activity north of our area
is producing some lightning, and blended model guidance suggests
as much as a 20 percent probability of thunder occurring around
the Yosemite vicinity late this afternoon. Meanwhile, as inland
surface pressure gradients tighten, gusty winds will continue to
increase, with frequent gusts up to 55 mph expected in the Mojave
desert Slopes. These gusty winds will continue through Wednesday
evening as the trough swings inland. A Wind Advisory is in effect
for this area through 8 PM Wednesday.

As the upper level low tracks overhead Wednesday, scattered
showers are expected to develop again over the Sierra, with
up to 15-20 percent probabilities for thunder shown in blended
model guidance for areas from Fresno County northward.
Temperatures will be a bit warmer Wednesday, but still around 10
degrees below climo. Temperatures continue to trend upward
through the end of the week under weakly building high pressure,
reaching a couple of degrees above normal by Friday.

The weekend will bring additional warming under a further strengthening
ridge in advance of an approaching shortwave trough. Afternoon
highs Saturday and Sunday are likely to be around 10 degrees above
normal. As the shortwave trough moves inland, the main energy will
remain north of our area, but we will see a few degrees of cooling
and more gusty winds for early next week.

.AVIATION...
Westerly wind gusts up to 45 knots are expected at times over the
Kern County mountains. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms
are possible over the Sierra Nevada after 18Z Wednesday. Otherwise,
VFR conditions will prevail across Central California for at
least the next 24 hrs.
