Drought in Minnesota, November 1 to 30, 2021

The month began with D3 Extreme Drought across the northwestern quarter of the county with D2 Severe Drought across the remainder of the county. Precipitation amounts of 1 to 2 inches over the first two weeks of the month led to the removal of the area of D3 Extreme Drought with the update on the 16th, leaving the entire county in D2 Severe Drought. Less than a half inch of precipitation was received over the remainder of the month and no additional changes in the drought status were observed.

The month began with D3 Extreme Drought across the eastern quarter of the northern part of the county with D2 Severe Drought across the remainder of the county. Precipitation amounts of 1 to 2 inches over the first two weeks of the month led to the removal of the area of D3 Extreme Drought with the update on the 16th, leaving the entirety of northern St. Louis County in D2 Severe Drought. Less than a half inch of precipitation was received over the remainder of the month and no additional changes in the drought status were observed.

The month began with D2 Severe Drought across the entirety of the central part of the county. Precipitation amounts of 1 to 1.5 inches over the first two weeks of the month led to the trimming of the area of D2 Severe Drought in the far southeastern corner with the update on the 16th, leaving D1 Moderate Drought in this area. Only around a tenth of an inch of precipitation was received over the remainder of the month and no additional changes in the drought status were observed.

The month began with D2 Severe Drought across the entirety of the northern part of the county. Precipitation was near to very slightly above normal for the month, but no changes in the drought status were observed.

Rainfall during the last week of October led to the removal of D2 Extreme Drought in areas along and south of the Mississippi River, being replaced with D1 Moderate Drought. Precipitation over the remainder of the month was near to very slightly above normal and no additional changes in the drought status were observed.

The month began with D2 Severe Drought across the entirety of the northern part of the county. Rainfall during the last week of October led to the removal of D2 Extreme Drought in the southeastern half of the northern part of the county, being replaced with D1 Moderate Drought with the update on the 2nd. Precipitation over the remainder of the month was near to very slightly above normal with most of it falling during the first two weeks. This led to further reduction in the area of D2 Severe Drought with the update on the 16th, leaving only areas along and north of US 2 in D2 Severe Drought with D1 Moderate Drought across the remainder of the northern part of the county. No additional changes in the drought status were seen over the remainder of the month.

The month began with D2 Severe Drought across the far northeastern corner of the southern part of the county. Rainfall during the last week of October led to a slight reduction of D2 Extreme Drought, being replaced with D1 Moderate Drought. Precipitation over the remainder of the month was near to very slightly above normal with most of it occurring over the first two weeks of the month. With the update on the 16th, the remainder of the area of D2 Severe Drought was removed leaving D1 Moderate Drought and a tiny area of D0 Abnormally Dry in the far southern part of the county.

Rainfall during the last week of October led to the removal of D2 Extreme Drought for areas west of the Mississippi River with the update on the 2nd, leaving D2 Extreme Drought in areas along and east of the Mississippi River. Precipitation of 1 to 2 inches was observed over the month which was slightly above normal for most of the area. However, no additional changes in the drought status were observed over the remainder of the month.

The month began with D2 Severe Drought across most of southern St. Louis County along with the far northwest corner of Carlton County. D1 Moderate Drought was observed from the Twin Ports area into most of Carlton County. Precipitation of an inch to an inch and a half was received during the first two weeks of the month leading to a slight reduction in the area of D2 Severe Drought in the southeastern corner of St. Louis County. An overall dry remainder of the month resulted in no additional changes to the drought index.

Most of the area was under D3 Extreme Drought conditions to begin the month outside of the eastern tip of Cook County which was in D2 Severe Drought. Slightly above normal precipitation thorugh the first few weeks of the month resulted in the reduction of D3 Extreme Drought across the western third of Lake County, being replaced with D2 Severe Drought with the update on the 16th. Additional precipitation over the remainder of the month on the order of 1 to 2 inches plus pushed the monthly total well above normal for most of the area except for far northern Lake County. Further reduction in the area of D3 Extreme Drought across the southern reaches of both Lake and Cook counties was seen with the update on the 30th.

Much of the area was under D2 Severe Drought with areas of D3 Extreme Drought across the northeastern tip of the county to begin the month. Several bouts of precipitation were seen through the first half of the month with heavier precipitation the last week of the month. This pushed precipitation totals for the month 1 to 2 inches plus above normal, especially across the eastern half of the area. This lead to the removal of D3 Extreme Drought in the region leaving D2 Severe Drought with the update on the 30th.
