What happened

The episode as NWS BUF wrote it up.

A strong and complex low moved out of the Midwest and into the central Great Lakes that passed just north of our area while secondary cyclogenesis occurred off the Middle Atlantic coast. The track of the low brought snow across the area that changed to mixed precipitation and eventually rain south of the Thruway. The warm nose aloft did not make it all the way up into the North Country, thus heavier snow fell there. This resulted in a longer duration synoptic snow that ended as a bit of lake effect off of the lakes, but due to ice cover on Lake Erie, the snow totals downstream of Lake Ontario were far greater. Additionally, in the wake of the cold front, gusty winds brought marginally strong winds into areas just east of Lake Erie. Snow totals included 15 inches in Constableville, 12 inches in Redfield, and 7.9 inches in Watertown. The strongest winds were back in Erie County, where 59 mph was measured at the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport.
