Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 345 AM PDT Tue Apr 9 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A fast moving weather system will sweep across the region today and tonight bringing strong winds and cooler temperatures to most areas through Wednesday. A brief lull in the weather pattern is expected Thursday before the next system moves in on Friday with isolated to scattered showers and possibly light snow in the mountains. Warmer temperatures will return over the weekend and early next week with breezy periods. && .SHORT TERM...Today through next Tuesday. A high wind event is still shaping up for most of our region today through Wednesday and no changes are planned for the previously issued warnings and advisories. The feature bringing the winds is a cold trough which was moving into Northern California this morning and is forecast to quickly dig down over southern Nevada and surrounding areas by this evening. Winds were already picking up over the southern Sierra/Owens Valley and the higher terrain of San Bernardino and Clark counties where automated sensors were reporting gusts of 25-35 mph. An extensive belt of southwest to west winds will increase across San Bernardino, Clark and Mohave counties through this afternoon. Meanwhile, a vigorous cold front followed by northwest winds will sweep down through Inyo county and south central Nevada and is expected to punch into the Las Vegas Valley between 5 PM and 7 PM this evening. Stiff northwest winds will persist overnight and Wednesday as the upper trough spins up into a closed low pulling away over Utah and Colorado. A typical progressive spring pattern will continue through early next week as northwest flow aloft allows another trough to dive into southern California and Arizona Thursday night and Friday. This will bring sufficient moisture to produce isolated to scattered showers across much of the forecast area with snow levels lowering to between 5000 and 6000 feet MSL. This system will pull away leaving a weak ridge and fair weather over the forecast area Saturday followed by another trough headed our way late Sunday and Monday which should primarily stir up the winds again before moving away and leaving a northwest flow aloft on Tuesday. Temperatures will bottom out several degrees below normal Wednesday through Friday followed by a rebound into the upper 70s to mid 80s across the Mojave Desert zones over the weekend and early next week. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Still expecting strong winds today and tonight. Sped up the timing of arrival of increasing winds, as gusts have already developed overnight. Gusts to around 30kts are likely just after sunrise. Southwest winds will then continue to increase through the morning, with gusts to 40kts likely by around midday. Strongest winds will likely be 20-00Z, with gusts over 40kts likely. AWW winds are possible. Blowing dust is likely at times as well, which may reduce visibility to 4 or 5SM but low confidence in reduced visibility at this time. A cold front will sweep through this evening. Strong winds are likely along this front, with gusts to 50kts possible. Passage of the front will be between 00Z-03Z. Behind the front, winds will back northwest and subside slightly. Winds overnight will remain gusty, with 25-30kts gusts likely. Breezy north winds will continue on Wednesday, with continued gusts 20-30kts through the day. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Strong gusts are expected at most TAF sites just after sunrise and increase through the morning into the afternoon. Widespread gusts 30-40 kts expected, with higher gusts to 50-60kts likely at DAG. Strongest winds will be late this afternoon through sunset. Expected continued gusty winds overnight behind a cold front that will veer winds northwest, with gusts 20-25kts likely in many locations, and higher gusts at DAG. Blowing dust can be expected at times, especially this afternoon, and may reduce visibilities to 3SM or lower at times. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...High winds are expected today and tonight.
