Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
1109 AM PDT Tue Apr 9 2019
.SYNOPSIS...Isolated showers will continue to move across the region
in wake of a frontal passage. Conditions dry out from north to south
through the day with strengthening northwesterly winds. Seasonably
cool and breezy conditions will persist through midweek with the
potential for isolated showers returning Thursday night into Friday.
Mainly dry weather is forecast for the upcoming weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...as of 08:30 AM PDT Tuesday...A post frontal showery
regime remains over the Bay Area this morning. For the most part,
the bulk of the precip has ended. However, KMUX radar imagery
still indicates a few lingering isolated showers. Weak instability
combined with daytime heating will keep a few isolated instability
showers through out the day. Otherwise, much more sunshine will
be seen. Cold air advection behind the departing front will usher
in breezy conditions as well. Gusts of 30-40 MPH will be possible,
especially higher peaks and coastal waters.
Dry weather returns by tonight and continues into Thursday. Next
chance for precip, albeit small chance, returns Thursday night.
No update needed.
&&
.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:09 AM PDT Tuesday...A weak frontal
boundary continues to push inland across the region early this
morning with isolated showers moving from northwest to southeast.
These showers are generally producing trace amounts to a few
hundredths of an inch per hour. Aside from some wet roadways this
morning, impacts from these showers will be minimal. Shower
activity will tapper off from north to south through sunrise with
a few lingering showers possible over the Central Coast and inland
East Bay Hills through the morning hours. In wake of the frontal
passage, northwesterly winds will become breezy to locally gusty
by this afternoon along the coast and over the region's
ridges/peaks. These winds will also make for blustery conditions
this afternoon with temperatures only warming into the upper 50s
coast to 60s inland.
Temperatures tick upward a few degrees by Wednesday, yet breezy
conditions will prevail as surface high pressure builds inland from
the west. Dry weather conditions will also prevail Wednesday into
Thursday with temperatures near seasonal averages. Look for an
increase in higher level cloud cover by Thursday as a mid/upper
level trough drops southward into the Great Basin. This low looks to
also cool temperatures by a few degrees and potentially bring some
showers to the region Thursday night into Friday. However, systems
such as this typically do not produce widespread rainfall over our
region.
Conditions again dry out by Friday afternoon into Saturday with
warmer temperatures heading into the weekend. Overall, dry weather
conditions are likely though Sunday as well with an increase in
cloud cover as another weak system pushes inland to the north. While
we cannot rule out a few showers returning to the region early next
week, widespread rainfall is unlikely and any showers to do develop
should have minimal impacts.
&&
.AVIATION...As of 10:50 AM PDT Tuesday...For 18z tafs. Gusty
northerly winds are sweeping away the low clouds across the
region. Anticipate mainly clear skies through the forecast period.
Strong onshore flow will strengthen today with gusts of 25 to 35
kt across the region expected by the afternoon.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions will prevail through the
forecast period. West winds will strengthen today. Anticipate
sustained westerly winds of 20 to 30 kt with wind gusts around 35
to 40 kt through this afternoon and evening. An Airport Weather
Warning has been issued for KSFO for strong and gusty winds.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions will prevail through the
forecast period. West winds will strengthen today with sustained
westerly winds of 10 to 20 kt and wind gusts to 25 kt expected
through this afternoon and evening.
&&
.MARINE...as of 8:43 AM PDT Tuesday...Strong high pressure will
build over the eastern Pacific today resulting in increasing
northerly winds across the coastal waters. Widespread gale force
winds are expected to develop by this afternoon. These winds will
generate steep fresh swell creating hazardous seas conditions over
the waters, especially for smaller vessels. Expect winds to
remain elevated through much of the week. Light to moderate
northwest swell will continue through the week.
