The main impact from this system was strong winds with the cold front as it pushed through the area during the afternoon of February 10. Several reporting stations in the San Joaquin Valley and southern Sierra foothills measured gusts above 35 mph and several stations in the Kern County Mountains and Deserts measured gusts above 45 mph and a few low impact indicator sites measured gusts exceeding 60 mph.

Front is moving through the Central California Interior rather quickly today. We have cancelled the winter storm warning for Yosemite Park area and expired the west side winter weather advisory. We have extended the winter weather advisory for the Tulare county foothills until 2 PM PST as well as the Winter Storm warning for the Tulare county mountains until 2 PM PST. The HRRR is cutting off the precip in Kern county mountains by around 6PM this evening as well as the winds in the Kern desert and we have trimmed that back as well. We didnt make any changes to the upcoming Freeze Warning for tonight, however the new guidance is a bit warmer for tomorrow night. We still have time to evaluate how cold it will get tomorrow night. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 429 AM PST Sun Feb 10 2019/ DISCUSSION... A low pressure system moving inland across Oregon/ northern CA is pushing an area of precipitation south and east across central CA this morning. Moderate to locally heavy precip has currently spread as far south as the northwest corner of Kern County. This area of precip is progged to push through our area during the day today with the passing frontal system, and move off to the south and east by later this afternoon. Short range high res models are developing some scattered showers in the colder air behind the system. Significant accumulations of additional snow are occuring above the snow level, which is currently running around 3500 ft. A winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Sierra Nevada for the continuing snowfall. With the relatively low snow levels and colder air coming behind the front, snow can be expected down into the foothills and the highest elevations along the west side of the SJ Valley. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect there. As the precipitation move further south through Kern County, snow accumulating over the mountains there will cause travel difficulties. With snow levels below 4000 ft, the passes will experience frozen precipitation and travel could be disrupted. The Winter Weather Advisory there remains in effect. Winds are expected to increase with the passing system, and are projected to gust around 55 mph from the west today through this evening through and below the passes in Kern County. The High Wind Watch for the desert zones has been replaced with a Wind Advisory there. The final significant impact from the current storm system will be colder temperatures, with lows expected to dip below the freezing mark in the San Joaquin Valley early Monday morning and again Tuesday. This can damage sensitive vegetation and crops, thus a Freeze Warning is in effect for Monday morning, with the Freeze Watch remaining for Tuesday morning. Models agree on dry and generally mild conditions Monday and Tuesday, outside the freezing morning temps, as a shortwave ridge builds overhead in advance of another approaching trough. There are strength, timing and trajectory differences amongst the models with this approaching system, but general agreement on a return to wet unsettled conditions for the latter half of next week. This is expected to be a warmer and wetter system than the current storm and could cause hydrologic impacts in the higher terrain. && .AVIATION... Areas of mountain obscuring IFR in low clouds and precipitation in the southern Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills thru 06Z Mon. Local MVFR ceilings are possible in low clouds the San Joaquin Valley. Wind gusts above 40 KTS are possible in the Kern County Deserts through 03Z Mon.
