Storm over the Gulf of Maine will move off through the Maritimes
this afternoon, removing snow from Southern New England but also
bringing strong or damaging wind. Very cold arctic air will
dominate the region Tuesday into Friday. A coastal storm may
develop and spread snow into southern New England Friday night
and Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Radar at 10 AM showed rain over parts of Cape Cod and the coast
of Plymouth, with snow across much of Eastern Mass and RI. All
of this was moving ENE with the back edge from roughly
Greenfield MA to Newport RI. Movement extrapolates past the
eastern Mass coastline by 17Z/Noon. Expect the snow/rain to
taper off late morning/midday.
The Gulf of Maine low has been rapidly deepening, increasing the
pressure gradient over Southern New England with increasing
Northwest wind. This is creating cold advection with in turn
increases mixing...drawing strong winds aloft down to the
surface. Winds aloft will be 40-50 knots, roughly 50-60 mph,
which means gusts near those speeds developing during midday and
afternoon.
The cold advection will mean freezing of any wet surfaces, which
will bring on some treacherous road conditions.
We will drop the Winter Storm Warning for the CT Valley and
Northeast CT with this package, and expect to be dropping the
remainder of the warning Noon-1 PM.

Strong to damaging winds continuing overnight for portions of S
New England. Highest confidence across the high terrain and
along the coast. Cold air advection continues, lapse rates
remain steep on up to H6. The top of the layer still blowing at
times 50 to 60 mph. Can't rule out the full potential of such
momentum mixing down to the surface. Clearing out, temperatures
drop to lows in the single digits to teens, 20s along the coast.

Strong PNA pattern with long wave upper trough axis over east
central North America looks to persist through the forecast period.
Short wave energy dropping into the trough will act to recharge cold
air as well as potentially trigger coastal cyclogenesis over the
next week or so. There is high confidence on much below normal
temperatures for this week and much lower confidence on specific
storm threats.
Temperatures... Temperatures will be below normal on Tuesday with
highs ranging from the upper teens across western Franklin County to
around 30 across the outer Cape and Islands. The coldest
temperatures, however, look to be in the Wednesday to Thursday
period when a model consensus of 850 mb temperatures of -20C to -24C
reflect up to 3 standard deviations below normal. High temperatures
will struggle to get out of the teens in many locations Wednesday
and Thursday. In fact, temperatures will probably not even rise
above the single numbers across much of interior MA on Thursday,
when we may set new record low max temperatures (see climate
section). Have lowered the model blend guidance a few degrees lower
to compensate for some "washing out" that can occur with blended
data. Although 850 mb temperatures modify a little on Friday,
increasing clouds may keep high temperatures only in the teens or
low 20s across much of the area.
Ocean Effect Snow Potential... Temperature difference approaching
20C degrees between ocean surface and 850 mb may set the stage for
one or two bouts of ocean effect snow showers across the outer Cape,
if winds develop enough of a northerly component. Have nudged slight
chance POPs to the outer Cape for Wednesday night through Thursday
night to depict this potential, albeit low at this time.
Coastal Storm Potential... The large scale pattern is favorable for
coastal cyclogenesis as one or two of the stronger short wave
troughs interact with a tight baroclinic zone just off the United
States east coast. Ensembles depict considerable spread in timing
and placement of coastal low development. Among other things, there
remains uncertainty as to whether there may be phasing between the
northern and southern streams. The last several runs of
deterministic models have also hinted at an inverted low level
trough or Norlun trough feature. For now will continue with chance
POPs Friday night through Saturday night with slight chance POPs
lingering for a time into Sunday to account for timing
uncertainties. The impact of a potential weekend storm may not
become all that clear until we are 2 or 3 days out given the
contributing energy is over the data sparse regions of the Arctic
and Pacific Ocean.

trending east. Expect this to move off the Eastern Mass coast
around 17-18Z. Snow is ending in western CT. Expect cigs and
vsbys to improve through the midday/afternoon with MVFR and IFR
improving to VFR mid to late afternoon.
Wind is also a factor. Intensifying low pressure Gulf of Maine
is bringing increasing NW wind, and this will also draw 50-60
knot wind gusts down to the surface. These strong winds will
diminish inland tonigiht but linger along the coast.
KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence.
Heavy snow will diminish 16-17Z and snow will end 17-18Z. Strong
winds with gusts 45-50 knots, which will draw colder air over
the airport. Expect temperatures at or below freezing
temperature much of the afternoon.
KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence.

winds gusting 40-45 knots.
