What happened

The episode as NWS FGF wrote it up.

During the early evening of Wednesday, October 25, 2017, an area of low pressure was located over northwest North Dakota. Ahead of the low, temperatures ranged in the mid 40s to low 50s with southeast winds. Just after midnight on the 26th, the low had moved right over the Grand Forks area, surrounded by fairly light winds. However, just to the west, around the Devils Lake region, winds had switched around to the north to northwest and quickly increased. These gusty north winds spread into the rest of eastern North Dakota and the Red River Valley in the early morning hours and remained high throughout most of the day. Winds gusted up to 65 mph with high sustained wind speeds as well.
