.SYNOPSIS...A cold weather system will bring strong winds to the
Western Mojave desert and a chance of showers to much of the region
today. Light accumulations of snow can be expected in our local
mountains mainly above 5000 feet. Drier conditions return Monday but
cool conditions can be expected much of the week with occasional
shots of north winds.

&&

.UPDATE...Quick hitting storm producing widespread rain and snow
across Inyo. Esmeralda, central Nye and northern Lincoln Counties
this morning. So far its been all liquid precipitation in Bishop
with the snow level less than a thousand feet above the valley
floor. In the coming hours clouds will build with shower chances
increasing in Clark and Mohave Counties. The Spring Mtns and parts
of Lincoln County look to probably pick up another 1-3 inches. That
would be on top of the 2 new inches SNOTEL stations reported in Lee
Canyon overnight. Showers will dissipate and exit from Mohave County
by late evening.

Monitoring winds around Las Vegas and the Spring Mtns. Looks like I
may be able to cancel the Wind Advisory early. Will make that
determination in another 1 hour or so as more new guidance arrives.

.PREV DISCUSSION...200 AM PST SUN NOV 27 2016
.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night.

Our area finds itself between systems early this morning as the
first shortwave trough exits to our east ahead of a secondary,
stronger shortwave due into our forecast area by later this morning.
Only a few light showers remain at this hour across eastern Lincoln
and northern Mohave counties. As we progress later into the
day...renewed shower development is expected to organize across the
southern Great Basin and drift southeast ahead of a potent shortwave
diving in from the Great Basin. While the trajectory is a fairly dry
one...strong dynamics and cold air aloft will aid in the generation
of instability driven showers. Even a few thunderstorms will be
possible especially in the mid/late afternoon across northwest
Arizona. The heaviest precipitation is likely to fall across eastern
Mohave county...but just about everywhere stands the chance to see
precipitation at some point today. Across the Spring
Mountains...best chances for accumulating snow will be near Mt.
Charleston and Lee Canyon...where a quick inch or two will be
possible during the mid afternoon. Overall however...I anticipate
the majority of precipitation related impacts to be light.

Meanwhile...across the Western Mojave desert, the incoming trough
will bring with it a strong temperature differential and associated
strong winds into the area. Guidance suggests high wind potential
during the day today, particularly for Barstow/Daggett...Fort
Irwin...and Twentynine Palms. Gusts to 60 mph will be a possibility
along with areas of blowing dust. I went ahead and issued a warning
for those areas today...and expanded the wind advisory to include
southeast San Bernardino county as well. Northwest winds behind the
storm system will move into our northwestern zones during the
afternoon...and the wind advisory for that area continues to look
good.

More peaceful weather is in store Monday and Tuesday...though breezy
north winds will linger through the short term period. Much cooler
temperatures can be expected for the start of the work week...with
below normal temperatures expected. We will need to pay close
attention to the morning lows as we start the workweek...with
temperatures falling to near freezing in several locations where
this may not have yet occured this fall.

.Long Term...Wednesday through Saturday.

Very weak ridging will transition to northwest flow across the area
Wednesday. Winds look to be fairly light under mostly sunny skies
with cool temperatures. Still looking at a developing low dropping
south through the area Thursday through Friday. The models tonight
are not in as good agreement with the exact track of the low with
the ECMWF having the track farther west than other operational
models. So, I made no significant changes to the forecast with a
slight chance of showers working into the extreme northern part of
the forecast area Thursday and spreading a little farther south
through the southern Great Basin Thursday night. Precipitation
chances then shift to mainly Mohave County Friday as the low drops
south to either northern Baja or southern Arizona, depending on
which model verifies. Moisture will be limited with this system
given the inland track and precipitation should be on the light side
and limited to mainly the higher terrain. The entire forecast area
should be dry Saturday as the low moves into northwest Mexico. The
main impact with this system will be cool temperatures and gusty
northerly winds Thursday through Saturday.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Breezy southwest winds are expected
through midday today with gusts to 30 knots possible in the morning
before relaxing to 25 knots or less by late morning. A wind shift to
the northwest will arrive by late in the afternoon (between 21-23z)
along with a chance of showers in the area. CIGS to near 5k will be
possible with shower activity. Clouds and showers will quickly push
east after 00z with improving sky conditions expected thereafter,
along decreasing winds.

For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast
California...Strong winds expected across the Western Deserts today
near KDAG and KNXP with gusts over 50 knots possible especially
after 16z. Areas of blowing dust likely as well. Further
east...chances for shower activity will be on the increase across
Southern Nevada and Northwest Arizona (less so for eastern
California) with CIGS to 5k AGL possible with brief mountain
obscurations possible in heavy showers. Widespread turbulence can be
expected as well. Conditions will improve after 00z with winds
gradually decreasing and improving sky conditions.

&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...A storm system will bring
chances of precipitation to much of the region through Sunday night.
Spotters should report significant weather according to standard
operating procedures.
